When Benimaru finally did sleep, his dreams were haunted by the same nightmare that had plagued him since you burned.

-------------

His eyes snapped open in a dark empty room. Dull light from outside revealed 1 window in the shape of an X. He stood and stepped towards it slowly, as his eyes darted around the room at the distant echoing voices.

"No- No- Captain Shinmon?" Shinra's voice cracked in genuine fear.

"Stay back, Shinra." Obi ordered.

Beni ran to the window in time to see his hand raise, like he was watching through someone else's eyes.

"No- no stop." Benimaru tried to fire at the glass, but his flames wouldn't light. He punched it again and again, pleading under his breath in helpless disbelief. "RUN!!" he cried to Obi, who shielded his team.

It was no use. Beni watched as Obi was shot down by his own hand.

------------

Benimaru jolted awake under you. He steadied his breathing quickly, but you still woke up. "Honey...? You okay?" You mumbled into him.

"Sorry. Go back to sleep." He dismissed. Every iteration of the dream was the same dark room, the same helpless feeling, but a different member of company 8 or company 7 who-

You kissed down his ribcage to his stomach. "That's a 'no', then." You planted a tender, longer kiss on his skin before you rose to your feet. "I'll be right back-" He caught your hand. "...Or you can come with me?" You offered.

He followed you to the kitchen as you made him a small cup of tea. He watched you select a tincture he'd seen you use, but that he'd never tried. "What is it?"

You squeezed a full dropper into his cup. "It'll help you sleep. And it suppresses the nightmares you've avoided telling me about." You slid him the cup. "It's also good for pain. You've smoked a variant of it before."

He should have figured you knew about the nightmares. "Why do you take it?" He asked as he took a sip. His nose crinkled.

"Not the tastiest thing in the world, I'll work on that." You smirked. "Anxiety." You answered him.

"Can't imagine why you'd be anxious." He joked dryly as he gestured towards the 4th and Euro camp.

You sat down in his lap, facing him. You rested your head over his shoulder, and he took another sip of his tea as you half joked. "Well, there's that. But then I'm anxious that when all this is said and done, that I'll just be so boring to you compared to all this excitement-"

"Ha!" He scoffed, amused and pained as he put his cup down and held you tighter. "That's all I want, Y/n. I want us to be bored as shit."

"Yeah?" You mused, probing him to talk about the future to distract himself from whatever dark visions haunted his nightmares.

"Yeah. Lay on the floor of the guard house with fuck all to do. Because nothing is on fire, and everyone here has food, shelter-"

You kissed his shoulder. "Promise you won't get bored of me?"

"I promise." He reassured without thinking. He was quiet for a moment before he chuckled lowly.

"Hm?" You shifted in his lap to get even more comfortable.

"So. You're anxious that I'll get bored of you, but you're also anxious about being 'too much trouble' for me." His tone was teasing, and a little more relaxed, which relieved you.

Your voice remained light, playful. "Yep. Sounds about right." You kissed his neck.

He rocked slowly back to lay on his back, pinned under you as you supported yourself on your hands at either side of his head. "And marrying you yesterday didn't alleviate any of that?" He teased again.
