I walked through the isles in Walmart trying to find my way to produce. It was colder in the store today. Not a normal chill but more so the kind that leaves your nose sore. I passed the party decorations and came to the hallmark card isle. For no particular reason I started rummaging through them. Looking at the cards with cute dogs and funny pictures on them. One of them read "congratulations on the child but it looked like twins!". I laughed out loud. Loud enough so that a women a few feet down looked over at me. I stared back for too long. I knew it had been too long because she started speaking to me. She smiled, walked a bit closer and pointed at the card I was holding.
"Who is it"? She asked. This caught me off guard. "What"? I answered. "Whose expecting the baby"?
"Oh!" I laughed. "No one. I was just looking around".
"You ought to be more careful at what you look at. The universe has a funny way of telling you things" she smiled, a familiar smile, one that made the room feel much warmer.
"I'm sorry I don't know your name darling".
I answered "Hanak-" I thought. "Hana".
"Well it's nice to meet you deary I'm Emily. Perhaps I'll see you around then" and with that she took off down the lane and disappeared.
I was never one to spark conversation with a stranger. Up until I was 11 I had never spoken to anyone who I wasn't related to. I was homeschooled until this recent year when I graduated. Do I regret being homeschooled my entire educational life? No. I look around me and I see nothing but ignorance in society. I'm glad I got to stay as far from that as possible.
I managed to pull myself away from the cards just long enough to make my way through the store to the produce section. I sorted through the meat until I found what I wanted. As I placed it into my buggie a man bumped into my cart. He turned around and looked at me. His eyes were gorgeous yellow and he sounded angelic when he said "sorry"
"It's quite okay. I didn't see you"
He looked into my buggie and then back at me. "Red Bean curry"?
I snapped out of the trance that he held me in. "Uh yes. How'd you know"?
He snickered. "I make it all the time. It's particularly good with-" he looked into his buggie and pulled out a white spice bottle. "This". He threw it at me and I barely caught it. "That should make it taste amazing...what's your name?"
I stuttered for a second. "H-Hana"
"Right. That's a beautiful name. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of each other in the future".
I smiled and looked down at the floor.
"Maybe so-" I looked up and saw that he was gone. His buggie just sat there but he was no where to be seen. I straightened up and went on. I got to check out and bought my items, and for some reason I felt like I would be seeing both him and the old lady soon as well.
