It was an unusually quiet day in the mansion, Ben playing games in his room with Jeff.
Jeff lay draped over Ben's bed, staring at glitch with bored eyes. "Can't we do something else? We've been playing forever."
Ben shook his head. "Nope. I'm having fun."
"But I'm bored~" Jeff whines from the bed, rolling off, landing near where Ben sat in a beanbag.
Ben doesn't take a second to even look at Jeff, just rolling their eyes, while continuing their boss fight.
"Why don't we go out and kill or something-?" Jeff asks, hope tinting his voice.
"Go without me."
"I don't want to go without you."
"That sucks." Ben replies. "Because I'm still not coming with you."
Jeff huffs, annoyed that it can't get its way. "Maybe I'll hang out with EJ then."
"Oh please. You hate him, I'd pay good money to see you two hang out." Ben says, amused at the concept.
The two sit in an uncomfortable silence for a minute, Jeff interrupting it by pulling out his phone.
The silence returns after the shuffle of Jeff getting his phone from his pocket, interrupted again mere seconds later when Jeff yells out, "Holy shit! It's already the 20th? April's pretty much over."
Ben froze up, it's body taking a moment to glitch from reality, game forgotten. Their controller lay on the floor, their left arm still gone, floating in the air on their game.
A small loading symbol appears in front of his face, his brain processing this revelation.
"Ben? Buddy?" Jeff asks, looking at Ben's arm on the screen. "Are you gucci?"
Ben blinks a few times, the loading symbol disappearing, his arm reappearing. "What day is it?" Ben asks, voice shaking.
"The... 20th...? Of April?" Jeff says, confused by Ben's reaction.
Ben glitches again, his face contorting inhumanly.
"Whatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuck-" Jeff says, poking Ben in the shoulder. Jeff starts wracking his brain, thinking of all the possible things that could be happening and could be wrong with Ben right now.
"Ben the program?" Jeff suggests, still poking Ben's shoulder. "Or....." Then Jeff remembers one key detail.
Ben's face returns to normal, his breathing staggered.
"Holyfuckingshit- It's because of your birth- I mean, uhh... yearly holiday that happens on a different day for everyone isn't it?!"
Ben softly nods.
"Shit. Dude, I'm so sorry, I forgot." Jeff says, pulling Ben into his arms.
Ben lays there, glitch's body shaking, tears welling in glitch's eyes.
Jeff awkwardly pats Ben's head, reassuring him as best as he can.
The door of the room opens, a lanky strawberry blonde guy with light blue eyes sticking his head into the room.
"Hey Ben? Can I have some brownie-" they ask, their crisp british accent breaking through the silence.
Upon seeing Ben sobbing in Jeff's arms he seems to grow unconformable, laughing lightly as he shuts the door.
"Wait! Niko-" Jeff sighs, knowing that Niko would be way more helpful in this scenario, but he likely isn't coming back anytime soon.
He continues to awkwardly pet Ben's hair, letting glitch get it out. Occasionally he adds in a, "there there, it's ok" for good measure.
That doesn't really work, as they answer to the reassurance by just sobbing harder, his body trembling.
Jeff has no fucking idea what to do. Ben has never, ever started panicking like this. Not on this level.
So, he decides to awkwardly pats Ben's back, "it's ok..?"
The door opens again gently.
Niko pokes his head in, Jeff didn't actually think he would come back, but yet here he was. "You should take them to Ann."
Jeff couldn't help but feel stupid. "Oh shit. Why didn't I think of that?"
"Because you Jeffery, are a dumbass." Niko hums, smirk on its face. "She was in her office last I saw her."
"Thanks Niko." Jeff couldn't help but feel a bit grateful for the younger proxy.
A feeling which he hated, because Niko was an annoying twink.
"Yeah. No problem." Niko turns and leaves.
"I'm gonna take you to Ann now... Ok?" Jeff tells Ben, softly slinging the crying blonde over his shoulder.
"It'll be ok. I promise." He felt dirty saying he promised.
Because he wasn't sure he could.
