Amber glared at her new partner for science.
"Ah hate group projects," she muttered. Without hesitation, her partner glared back. Neither ever really enjoyed each other's company, so obviously working together would be a blast. Luke observed Amber's moustache glasses.
"Those are so weird," he said with disgust. "Why would you wear them in public?" Amber rolled her eyes.
"Ah don't care what you think," she said, fake smiling to irritate him. Luke opened his mouth to say something, but stopped as Mrs. Cooper walked past the two.
"Get to work, you two," she said firmly. "And Amber, take those off, they're distracting." Amber grit her teeth, taking off her glasses as Luke stuck his bottom lip out annoyingly. She grunted and turned her focus to their project.
"You study the terrestrial planets," Amber said, rolling her eyes. "Ah'll take the Jovian, and then when we --"
"Why do you get to choose?" Luke interrupted. Amber heaved a deep sigh.
"Because Ah know what planets are," she said matter-of-a-fact like. "Ah'm smart, y'all are dumb." Luke smirked.
"Y'all?" He teased. "Says the dumb southern farmer!" He crossed his eyes and stuck his front teeth out dramatically.
"Ah ain't a farmer, ye dumb bag," she said coldly. "It's a stereotype. Yer the dumb one for assumin' all southerns are farmers!" The bell rang, and Amber quickly stood up, grabbed her books, and rushed out the door angrily.Amber grabbed her lunch from her locker and sat on the hill outside the school. She didn't like being cramped up inside, because the grade fives and sixes and sevens had to eat in the gym, (she was in grade six) while the older grades got to use the actual cafeteria. The sun was bright today, which made Amber happy. It made the grass look a little more appealing to sit on than it's usual spiky self.
"Amber!" Her two best friends waved to her as they made their way up the hill. Sam sprinted, being competitive and sporty, while Selena skipped, being girly and preppy.
"Hi guys," Amber smiled at them.
"Woah!" Selena said, leaning in way too close to Amber's face. "I know it's sunny out and all, but who knew Amber could get more freckles?!" At this point their noses were touching, so Amber slowly pushed her away. Selena never really had much regard for personal space. The freckles thing was true though; Amber's face was covered in them. Selena had already created a couple constellations out of them, making Amber feel incredibly uncomfortable.
"I got a new lunch kit!" Selena sang happily. It was white with pink and purple flowers scattered everywhere. Sam's was black with her name in red letters printed on it. Amber looked down at her lunch kit. It was a paper bag. Dumb southern farmer, Luke's voice rang inside her head.
"Amber you okay?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. Amber glanced back up at her friends.
"Yeah," she said quietly. "Ah'm fine."
"Ugh, did you hear Maddie and Rachel have a fan club?" Selena said, breaking the awkward silence.
"What?" Sam said, rolling her eyes in annoyance. "I can just imagine what they're gonna say to us. 'Hey, Losers! We have a fan club now, aren't we so special? We don't care our parents probably made it, but you suck, so go die in a hole!'" She released a fake girly giggle, flipping her short hair behind her shoulder. Before long, all three fell into a fit of real laughter.
"Hardy har har," Maddie snarled. Her and Rachel approached the trio, both holding handbags and sneering. "How cute. But the 'go die in a hole' part, that was about right."
"Get lost," Sam said with boredom. She was usually the best at handling these things, because Selena would just run off crying, and Amber always got way too defensive and fought back.
"You have a hate club, you know," Maddie said, ignoring Sam.
"It was started by us," Rachel clarified.
"Never would have figured that out," Amber grumbled.
"You guys are probably the only members," Sam said, snickering.
"Well at first, yeah, but now we have Luke," Rachel said excitedly. "He's so cute!" Amber stuck her tongue out in disgust.
"Shut up," Maddie told Rachel. "He's mine. He's out of your league anyway." Amber wasn't quite sure what that meant, but judging by Rachel's pouting expression, she guessed it wasn't a good thing.
"Anyway, once we get the whole school to join this club, we'll..." Maddie trailed off.
"You'll what?" Asked Sam.
"Well--I, um... The whole school will hate you!" Maddie concluded.
"Oh no!" Sam said sarcastically. "How tragic." Maddie rolled her eyes.
"It will be," she said. She and Rachel touched pinkies like they always did when they bested someone. They flipped their hair and strutted away from the group.
"Jeez, are you sure they aren't from some dramatic T.V. show?" Selena said.
"They'd sure love that," Amber agreed. "Listen, Ah gotta go, but do you girls wanna meet at the park after school?"
"Sure," the two said in unison. Amber nodded.
"Alright then. See ya later." Amber ran back to the school, leaving Sam and Selena in silence.
"Something's up with her," they said together. They exchanged knowing glances before finishing their lunches.
