In the early 1960s they began having hit records together like "A Fool In Love" and "River Deep Mountain High." Tina and Ike married in 1962.
While Ike Turner helped launch Tina's career, their relationship was abusive. Ike was physically and emotionally abusive towards Tina. For years she stayed in the marriage out of fear and low self esteem. In the late 1970s she reached her breaking point and left Ike, taking only $40. She filed for divorce and it was finalized in 1978.
After leaving Ike, Tina struggled financially but her determination and talent helped her stage a comeback. Her 1984 comeback album "Private Dancer" was a massive success, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. The title track and "What's Love Got To Do With It" became number one hits. She won her first Grammy award that year at age 45.
Tina went on to have a hugely successful solo career over the next decades, selling over 200 million albums globally. She toured extensively and continued recording hit songs.
