Syaoran skips down the concrete as he adjusts his bandana which covers his missing eye because he doesn't want anyone to see what he cant even explain. He continues through the sidewalk as he thinks of whether or not to call her. He is six and a half and has only one clue to who exactly his mother is. It's a phone number that is kinda like a baby blanket to him, because he doesn't remember when he got it or how; he has always had it.It's such a small wrinkled paper but holds so much meaning and he doesn't even know if it actually belongs to her.Even though he knows this he has never lost hope of it being hers because every night he dreams of the day a lady would answer and she would have the sweet and loving tone of voice that every mother would have, and he prays the mothers voice would belong to him.For some reason he never expected it to belong to a man that could potentially belong to his father because it,s something about a mother that seems much more comforting.
He has never called before for two reasons:
1.Because the payphone is $0.25 a minute and a days work for him is$4.75
2.His biggest fear of all; answering it and finding out that the number is either out of service or not his mother which means he loses his only item that has a thread that could link to his mother.
He has never had a real family, only a foster care that he ran away from two months after he turned five because of both verbal and physical abuse. Syaoran also ran away because as sad as it sounds,he knew that they wouldn't go looking for him.So he became the trash boy at the local ramen shop two blocks down from the abandoned apartment lot he sleeps at every night.
He stalls everyday to decide whether or not to call and today he feels lucky, because of the dollar bill he found on the streets. It will give him a free four minutes on the payphone, not taking away for the money needed for his dinner. When Syaoran arrives at the payphone booth he leens to and fro on the heel, and ball of his foot and starts dialing after he lets the machine take the dollar like a long spaghetti noodle. He likes to speak in his first language when he is alone, so he starts saying the number while dialing "shi, hachi, san (four, eight, three)...uh". He cant quite makeout the next number but it looks like a nine so he goes with it saying, "uuhhh"He giggles at the fact that he is guessing even know he is nervous to see who will answer, or if anyone will, but he continues "k-kyuu?(nine)" He takes a deep breath and continues "ni, go(two, five)" His hands start to persperate and get sticky as he gets it over with because he knows he cant stall forever. Syaoran finally continues "roku, roku, ichi shichi(six, six one, seven)".He hears it ring a few times and is a little frightened when he hears a breathing mouth on the other side.
