You caught up with a very confused looking Jesper, and Kaz quickly strode past him, telling him to follow along too. Jesper took a glance at you, before they started to walk in front of you with Kaz.
"So, she's actually going to come with us?" Jesper asked, pointing at you with his thumb. "Even when you despise her father? Boss, how can you know she's not a threat?"
Kaz took in a deep breath. "I don't."
Jesper was quiet for a minute or two after that, looking around himself every once in a while. "In other news, and I mean it, we need a demo man."
"Still on it?" Kaz retorted, and Jesper shrugged.
"I just brought it up tonight!"
"Jesper, you ask for an explosive expert on every job."
You trailed behind them, huffing quietly at them bickering about a topic that seemed to have gone over a thousand times, judging by Kaz's tone.
The street was fairly busy, some turning to glance at Kaz and you in fear as you passed, and somehow it didn't feel that good this time.
Maybe it was because of lack of sleep. Or maybe it was because you weren't with your father, or Dime Lions. Everyone thought you'd turned soft, teaming up with your father's worst enemy.
You wanted to feel disgusting, and in a way, you did. Maybe it was because this past day had been full of everything foreign - stuff you didn't know would happen. It was even oddly comforting, in a way.
It didn't make sense.
You shook your head, forcing those feelings down. You couldn't afford to make mistakes, starting to care about people in the gang where you were supposed to assassinate their leader.
Fortunately Kaz hadn't made you care about him, you still wanted to kill him.
A scent of hutspot fills your nostrils as you are laying a fancy plate with golden decorations in front of two boys and smiling. They smiled back, and you met the younger boy's eyes for a moment and paused, before quickly turning away.
"Remember, don't get attached, we're going to pluck them," your father said after the boys had left and you nodded.
"Of course not, papa," you had mumbled, and your father had then sent you off.
What?
There had been three of those already. Something that felt like a dream, or a closed memory.
Most likely a dream.
Then, you almost collided with Jesper as they abruptly stopped, and you noticed you were in front of Emerald Palace and ducked.
"Wait, they can't see me," you whispered and Jesper turned to look at you, while Kaz's eyes were on the building.
"Right. Um, boss, what do we do with her?" Jesper asked, and Kaz sighed. Jesper frowned, looking over at you hiding behind Kaz. "Are... we going to turn her in?"
"No," Kaz replied, leaning against his cane and turning his head towards you slightly. "Stay here with Jesper. After I'm done with meeting with my old business partner, I'm going to take you to meet a healer."
Jesper frowned at Kaz. "What are you going to do? I mean, who are you meeting?"
Kaz stared at the building, not answering, before he took a step forward and took a brief eye contact with Jesper. "Make sure they don't see me."
—
"Saints Kaz, where are you?" Jesper muttered, rocking back and forth on his heels.
You glanced at Jesper, wrapping your coat tighter around yourself. "He usually doesn't take this long?"
