My dad walked into the room. "We're doing the gift exchange now if you want to join us." He came over to the bed and sat on Maddie's bed. "There were so many memories in this room." He looked around. By now, Wesley and I had separated and were just sitting there. Watching him. "I know you're wondering where your things are. I moved them to Maddie's place in the house." He said and left.
I immediately got up and walked out of the room. Wesley followed. This is what caused me to question his intentions. He knew that I wouldn't go into that room without a reason. I walked to the end of the hall and stopped at the door to my left.
Maddie's place.
The place where Maddie would go if she didn't want to be bothered. I turned to Wesley, but right at that moment he got a phone call. He looked at it and his face sank. "I have to take this." He said and answered the phone, walking down the hall.
That left me all alone.
I opened the door and walked in.
The room was small. Only space for a small bed and table. The walls were dark with white trim. Every room in this house was so different, but somehow went together. My things were under the bed and I pulled them out. I don't know how my dad fit them under the bed because it was so jammed, that I could barely get them out.
I didn't want to be here. After Maddie died, I swore that I would never go in this room again, and here I was. This was Maddie's space. The one room in the house that she wouldn't let me in. The one room where she could just be her.
I quickly got my things and got out of that room. I had two suitcases which were filled to the brim with clothes and pictures. A few other things, but mostly those items. I had bags slung over both shoulders. Bedding and pillows.
Wesley finished his call and then helped me with my things.
"This is it?"
"It's a lot. I know."
"Arli. Love. This is practically nothing. This is all you kept when you went on tour with me?"
"Well, I got rid of the things I could live without. This is mostly clothing and pictures. When I moved in, the apartment was already furnished, so I never had to buy things to fill the space."
Wesley helped me get everything out from under the bed. "Do you want to stay here for a bit longer or do you want to go back? Totally up to you. I'm good with whatever."
"Aunty!" Genevieve ran towards me. She must have seen my dad come upstairs and she wanted to investigate. That's just who she was.
"Hi Eve."
"Are you weaving now?" She asked me.
"Should I stay?" I asked
She nodded. "I have a pwesent."
"Who gave it to you? Was it grandma?"
"No. It's for you!" She handed me a piece of paper.
