You wiped your sweaty palms on the back of your pants and adjusted the lanyard around your neck. The little picture on the ID smiled back at you. Next to it read: "Song Y/N, producer. Pledis Entertainment."
The minutes ticked by. The producer you would be shadowing for the next few weeks should've been here by now.
A quarter past the hour and the producer still hadn't shown up. You made your way back to the front desk where the assistant had checked you in. She smiled, looking up from her computer as you approached.
"Excuse me, do you know if the producer is on their way?" You asked.
"Hmm, he should be here. He doesn't have any other meetings today... You know what, he's probably in his studio. When he's working, he gets very focused and loses track of time. Why don't you see if he's there? It's on the sixth floor. Second door on the left."
"Thanks!" You waved. Butterflies fluttered in your stomach as you rode the elevators up to the sixth floor.
You took a deep breath and knocked on the studio's door. No answer. You knocked again. Still nothing. You tried the knob and it twisted open.
The studio looked familiar. There was a white couch, coffee table, and TV when you walked in. Behind that was a desk with a leather chair, computer, microphone, and several keyboards. The equipment was all top of the line and well taken care of. It was dark in the studio except for a single LED strip of lights casting blue shadows and a neon red sign that read "Woozi's room."
Your jaw dropped. That's why this studio looked so familiar. You had spent hours watching Woozi's live streams and other Seventeen content that was filmed here. You certainly hadn't pictured yourself seeing it in person ever, let alone on your first day.
"Who are you?" a voice behind you asked.
You spun around. Your eyes widened as Woozi himself stood there, glaring at you.
"I'm Y/N, the new producer." You held up your ID as proof.
"There are open studios down the hall."
"Oh, um, I'm actually supposed to meet the producer I'm shadowing. The front desk assistant said to meet them here in this studio. I'm guessing that it's you."
"You must be mistaken. I don't mentor newbees."
"I may be new to Pledis but I've been a producer for a few years," you retorted. Your cheeks felt hot with embarrassment. You never dreamed you'd be able to work with Woozi and he seemed intent on making sure that never came true.
Woozi rolled his eyes. "I don't have time for this. Go knock on someone else's door. I'm sure one of them would love to mentor you."
"But–"
Someone knocked on the door.
Woozi groaned. "Now who is it?"
The executive producer who had hired you opened the door, smiling when he saw you and Woozi. "Oh good, you've met Y/N. I know you don't usually mentor the new producers, but she's really got an ear for music. I just knew you two would work well together!"
"Can't one of the other producers mentor her? Bumzu? Baekho?" Woozi asked.
"No, I want her to work with you."
"But I have Seventeen's comeback to work on. Not to mention all of the other side projects."
"You want more creative freedom, right? Prove to the execs that you know what you're doing and mentor her." The producer's tone had a finality to it that stopped Woozi from arguing further. He turned his attention back to you. "Good luck Y/N. I know you'll do great."
"Thank you sir."
He waved before closing the door on his way out.
You glanced back to Woozi, not sure what to say. "So..."
Before you could think of anything, Woozi stood up and walked toward the door. He looked back over his shoulder at you. "You coming or what?"
You scrambled to catch up with him down the hallway.
"All of the studios are here on this floor. The other producers have already claimed these as their own, but feel free to use either one of these." He pointed to two doors on the opposite side of the hallway.
Woozi took you on a tour of the building, pointing out different points of interest: practice rooms, the cafeteria, admin offices. While you didn't expect him to have Seungkwan's or Hoshi's bubbling energeticness, Woozi was the president of the unwelcome committee. He gave the briefest descriptions of each place and moved on quickly with no time for questions. Despite his short stature, he zipped down the hallway as if he were trying to lose you.
He finally came to a halt in the lobby.
"And that's pretty much it." Woozi stuffed his hands in his pockets. "I'll see you tomorrow morning."
"Wait, but what about the rest of the day? What am I supposed to do?"
"I don't know. Explore the rest of the building? Hide out in one of the other studios? You'll figure something out."
"But you're supposed to be my mentor."
"Seeing as how I didn't know I was mentoring you until an hour ago, I've got nothing for you. We'll start tomorrow."
"But–"
"Tomorrow, 8 a.m."
