Anna and her family had transformed her living room into an inviting and cozy space for movie night. She had draped quilts over the couch and chairs, making a comfortable nest of blankets to curl up in while watching the film. The coffee table was covered with snacks - popcorn, chocolates, chips - all placed on decorative serving trays that added a pleasing aesthetic to what could have been an otherwise chaotic jumble of food items. Soft lighting illuminated the space from lamps and candles scattered around the room creating a warm atmosphere for Dean to arrive.
Lorelai and Anna exchanged glances when Dean arrived with a look of uncertainty on his face. He sheepishly walked over to where Rory was sitting and settled in next to her, almost immediately getting caught up in the movie. Lorelai made sure to discretely stay nearby in case any boundaries were crossed before stepping back and allowing them room for conversation.
Rory felt awkward around Dean when they were in the presence of her mother and sister because she did not know how to act. She tried to keep the conversation going, stumbling over her words as anxiety made it difficult for her to find the right things to say or do. At times, she caught herself blushing without any justifiable reason while other times, she simply found herself unable or unwilling to communicate with him altogether as if some invisible force was holding her back from engaging with him at all. Despite this sense of unease, however, Rory could feel a sense of warmth spreading through every inch inside whenever their eyes met which reminded her of how having a connection with someone felt. Despite the apprehensiveness that lingered between them at first, Rory slowly allowed herself to reciprocate Dean's gentle advances and even initiated some of her own when around Anna and Mom.
At the center of it all was a television set, and around it were arranged four armchairs. Rory and Dean took their seats side by side, while Anna sat next to Rory but slightly further away from Dean. Then Mom settled into an armchair that placed her a few feet away from them all yet still allowed her to have a full view of the trio as they watched Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Anna watched Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with a lifeless expression. Her eyes barely seemed to flicker behind her glasses, and she listlessly picked at her popcorn. She had seen it before, but this time was different; Dean was there with his irritating laughter and snarky comments about everything on screen. Her mother noticed Anna's subdued behavior immediately - as if sending nonverbal cues of disapproval had become second nature for both of them - yet said nothing.
Mom stood in the center of the room, her hands on her hips. "Rory and Anna," she began. She could see their eyes light up with anticipation— it was rare that Mom had anything fun to tell them. "I have a silly job for you two." The twinkle in her eyes gave away that this wasn't going to be an ordinary task - something more interesting was likely in store. She explained how they were both needed outside right then and there so she could talk privately with Dean about his intentions towards Rory without them getting embarrassed or worried by what might come out of his mouth while they were listening.
Lorelai smiled at Dean and took a sip of her coffee before beginning. She spoke lightly, yet with a firmness that showed she meant what she said. "Alright Dean, this is serious business we're talking about here. Rule number one: no drama kings or queens allowed! Rory's too young for the messiness that comes from those kinds of relationships so keep it simple and honest with her at all times." As Lorelai paused to take another sip, Dean watched intently waiting for rule number two. "Rule two: be respectful- treat Rory like the smart and amazing person she is," Lorelai.
Dean took a minute to ponder what Lorelai had said and nodded in agreement. He knew he was the luckiest guy around to have found someone like Rory who made him feel so alive and yet still respected her for who she was. "You got it, I promise," he replied.
Lorelai looked him directly in the eye and sighed. "There's one last rule of dating Rory," she said, her voice steady and stern. "You have to make sure you never interfere with her relationship with Anna." She paused for a moment before continuing, making sure he understood what she was saying. "That is my number one priority when it comes to protecting my daughters," she went on solemnly. "If I even get a hint that you are trying to come between them or incentivize their arguing – no matter how indirectly - then I won't hesitate to step in.". Dean nodded his head in agreement. He understood the bond between Rory and Anna was special, and he wanted to make sure he upheld that during their relationship. He didn't want to risk upsetting either of them or Lorelai, so he agreed to stay out of it no matter what happened.
Lorelai pursed her lips, her dark eyes flashing with threat. "If you ever hurt Rory or Anna," she said sternly, "It won't just be me keeping an eye on you – it will be the whole town." Her voice was firm and unwavering, each word dripping with potential consequences. Every person in Stars Hollow knew that Lorelai Gilmore meant what she said; a warning from her would never go unheard. Dean swallowed hard, his throat dry and tight. He knew better than to take this lightly. "I understand," he managed, nodding his head quickly in agreement.
Anna and Rory came back into the house, arms linked. The movie night was coming to a close as they kicked off their shoes and settled onto the couch with blankets over them. They huddled up together as laughter bubbled from their lips at an inside joke only they knew about.
