Another Night

The sound of my latest mother shutting her bedroom door was just one of the signals I needed to hear before I made my escape. Next, she would change into her pyjamas - a spotted pink pantsuit that looked about three sizes too big on her slim figure - then she would go into the bathroom, brush her teeth and hair (in that order), then she goes to bed. I quickly tied up my laces, flicked up the hood on my vest and slid my knife into the sheath I had specially made. I could hear scratching at the only window in my room, a pile of boxes next to it. I opened the window to see Beau sitting in the window box, his tail knocking over the tulips Ms Bryant planted for me when she decided to foster me. I could hear an almost wavering sound in my head, which meant Beau was about to send one of his messages.
Ready, Lily? He asked, almost teasing.
"It's Zara now. I'm ready." He nodded his dark black head and jumped down from the ledge. I climbed out of the window, only brushing past the now trampled flowers. I landed hard on the fake grass, but managed to start jogging the moment my feet touched the ground. It was slightly cold tonight, but I couldn't feel it through my thermal shirt. I turned to Beau, who was trotting along beside me.
"So, where are we going tonight?" I asked him, my breathing still calm as I ran.
There's a club just outside of town. I felt it yesterday, but I wanted to let you settle in. If he was my height, I would've given him a shove, but because he was no higher than my knees, I didn't. He was a black Labrador, or at least that is what he appeared to be. I knew the truth about Beau, though. He knew my truth too, only he and Davis did. Anyone else hasn't been around for long enough to figure it out. At least this town was better than the last one I was in; the population had barely any regrets - which is good, but boring.
By the time we arrived to the club outside of town, most of the party-goers were drunk and wouldn't be able to hit the side of a barn with a rock. It wasn't really fair for me to compare myself to them - I could hit the eye of the cow inside the barn - because I've had almost a millennium to perfect my abilities. Beau started to 'sniff' the air with his black snout. Eventually, he stopped, catching wind of the creature. I heard the wavering sound again, before I heard his voice.
Back alley. You take the direct route, and I'll go round the club. Be careful; there's a mortal there, he said as he took off, swerving around intoxicated mortals at great pace. I turned back to the club - a solid grey brick with thumping music emanating from it's guarded doors. Next to the club was a green dumpster with tacky graffiti spray-painted on it. Behind it, I saw flickers of a shadow, almost like something large was moving around back there. I ran forward, keeping my hood down lest I be spotted. I shimmied between the bin and the wall, still keeping a good pace. It didn't take long for me to realise what was happening. The mortal - a young man - had been attacked by the creature that now had its' sights set on me. I could hear Beau barking, but I stopped seeing anything past the behemoth. It didn't have a solid shape, it resembled a wisp of smoke. Two glowing ovals were the only solid on its body. I pulled out the knife, letting the quicksilver work its magic. Just being near it made the figure tremble, like I knew it would. In the creature's moment of weakness, I threw the knife right in between its' eyes. Knowing it wouldn't stay stunned for long, Beau ran forward and scratched it with his two front paws. The creature started to flicker, like a flame in the wind, before it finally evaporated. My knife fell to the ground with a clink. I picked it up, sheathed it and walked over to the man leaning against the wall, with Beau behind me. The man looked up at us, a look of fear instilled in his eyes.
He's bleeding quite heavily. I'll clean him up, and you can go home said Beau. I nodded and started jogging back toward my new house.
