The Power

P R O L O G U E * * * *

"When you have the Power to control the entire universe, you can feel it. You can feel energy surge through your veins. Something like a ball of light rolls in your chest. It’s either hot or cold, but you can’t quite tell which. It spreads through your body, strengthening your bones, smoothing your skin, and emptying your emotions. You can’t feel anything. You are indestructible. Your eyes will start to glow a strange, undiscovered color. Your skin radiates heat, and the skin of anyone who touches you will start to melt at the temperature. No one matters to you anymore, and only the urge to control everything lights your days. You could live for eons, years, or only minutes. The Power could kill you. Mostly Weak people desire the Power, because they are the ones who fear it most. The Strong people fight for it, because they are the ones who will use it for their own gain. The people who are neither? Well, there is yet to be a person like that, but I would assume that they would simply take the power because everyone else is busy.

"As soon as you posses the Power, you’ll feel as it moves through your body, a slight buzzing sound filling your ears. Then you’ll feel a hot, scorching pain, like white-hot knives slicing your skin over and over. Then, an eerie calm. You’d probably be crumpled on the floor from the pain, but maybe not. If you can bear it, at least. After that, you feel yourself being lifted up as a completely different person. It’s like a remote control vehicle: You’re the one driving, but you’re seeing it in a completely different point of view. When you do something, its not like you’re doing it automatically, you are literally forcing yourself to do it. You have to think; you have to send signals from your brain to your arms or legs, telling them what to do. Every breath is labored.

"Many wonder why most people even think of possessing the Power, they wonder why a person would want to put themselves through such misery. The answer is different for every human, though most would dream about because they would rather control the universe than someone else, they’d like to be the person who could wipe out nations if they pleased; to be the person who every single person fears. The Power makes one grow greedy, it makes the possessor’s desire to conquer unquenchable.

"My advice, Alice? Do not spend your days wasting away on the idea of the Power. It is an evil substance. Do not become like one of us. Stay away from it. It will only lead to your downfall, like mine."
