Chapter 3

Marlene's POV

Eleven years. I have lived as Marlene McKinnon for 11 years now. My mum and I are currently at Diagon Alley to get my school supplies. While mum was getting necessary potions and stationary supplies, she dropped me off at Ollivanders to get my wand. I have waited 11 years for this moment. I never knew what kind of wand Marlene had but I wonder if me being in this body changes anything either.

After trying out countless wands, I was resigned that maybe I wasn't meant to be a witch. Nothing is compatible with me. I look up at Mr. Ollivander in desperation when his eyes light up with a certain twinkle. "I wonder..." He mused before he went to the far back of the shop to search for another wand.

Not long after, Mr. Ollivander comes back with a pretty wooden box in his hand. He quickly but cautiously opened the box to hand me the most beautiful wand with rose designs on it. I take a hold of the wand and something clicked. It felt right. A light and soft breeze blew onto me as I held the wand.

"This was my father's last handcrafted wand before he passed. You see, his famous wands were all of the same cores, Kneazles whiskers, Dittany stalks and Kelpie manes. That inspired me to create wands with cores made of Dragon heartstrings, phoenix feather and unicorn hair. But this; this wand is made from Thestral tail hair as its core. It is most rare and tricky to make. A wand made from this core is said to be wielded by a witch or wizard who is capable of accepting death." My eyes widen from the information given. "Have you accepted death if it were to come, Miss McKinnon?"

I gathered myself before answering, "I suppose everyone dies eventually, right Mr. Ollivander?"

"Ah, but Miss McKinnon, I see more to your eyes than just the simple revelation of a person's life cycle." As he says this, a knock is heard from the window and we both turn to see my mother waving excited at us. She must have finished her errands. It has been a while since I've been here.

"Are we all set?" My mother asks as she enters the shop.

"Yes, Mrs. McKinnon. 10 ½ inches Rosewood Thestral tail hair core. That will be 10 galleons."

"10?!" My mother and I both exclaimed. Even Harry freaking Potter's wand was only 7 galleons!

"Yes, I'm afraid she is destined for my father's latest work. Thestral tail hair is also the most rare of wand cores." He explained.

I look at Mum, "Sorry mum." She smiled brightly at me.

"Not to worry, my dear. If that wand has chosen you, you are destined for greatness." She said reassuringly.

"I couldn't have said it any better myself," smiled Mr. Ollivander.

Saying "goodbye" was harder than I realized as I hugged both my parents before getting onto the Hogwarts Express. Dad was a crying mess while Mum was the one who tried – really hard – to hold it together for the both of them. I promised to write weekly or at least twice a month before heading off on my own. As soon as I get on this train and arrive at Hogwarts, my official battle begins.
