Jungkook's POV -
The morning sun filtered through the soft canopy of trees that lined the edge of my garden, casting golden patterns on the ground like divine art. I walked slowly, letting the fragrant breeze wrap around me like an old friend. My garden was blooming vibrantly-roses, lilies, jasmine vines coiling up ivory arches. Each petal held a piece of me, of my mother's memory, of every quiet morning I craved amidst the chaos of mafia empires and business empires alike.
A sip from my steaming cup of dark roast made me sigh softly, the kind of sigh that carried weight. Something felt... wrong today. I couldn't name it, but I could feel it. Like the air had thickened. My instincts, trained in darker alleys than most would ever imagine, were never wrong.
That's when I saw her.
Jae-hee.
My cousin sister-running across the courtyard like her soul was on fire, sobs bursting from her like she couldn't contain them. Her eyes were swollen red, tears staining her cheeks.
"Jae-hee!" I called out, concern rushing through me.
She didn't answer. She just ran, clutching her scarf, face down, breaking my heart with each breathless sob. I hurried toward her, careful not to spill my coffee, my concern outweighing my curiosity. Reaching her, I placed my cup on the stone railing and gently held her wrist.
"Hey... look at me," I said softly. "What's happened, Jae-hee?"
Her lip quivered as she looked up at me, mascara smudged, voice raw. "Oppa... a... a girl, she insulted me. Jungkook... she humiliated me in front of everyone!"
The blood in my veins turned molten.
Suppressing the rage bubbling in my chest, I took a deep breath and asked, "Who did it?"
She sniffled and barely managed to say the name.
"Y/n L/n."
Ah. So it was her.
I forced a tender smile for Jae-hee's sake and gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Alright, baby girl. Go rest, hmm? I'll take care of it. Trust me."
She nodded slowly, her faith in me so absolute it made my chest ache. With a small smile and a little more strength in her steps, she walked away.
But me? I stood there with fire in my chest and a smirk playing on my lips.
Y/n L/n. You dared to make my sister cry. That was your first mistake.
I took one final sip of my coffee, now lukewarm, and placed the cup in the sink. My mind already buzzed with a dozen ways I could approach this. Intimidation? Seduction? Cold revenge? I had all weapons at my disposal. But first-I had a company to run.
I grabbed my keys, my phone, and slung my bag over my shoulder. The road was nearly empty, perfect for the kind of speed I was in the mood for. I shifted gears, the engine of my sleek black Koenigsegg roaring like a beast let loose.
But just as I was passing the curve near the university lane-
A figure darted out.
A girl.
My eyes widened. I slammed the brakes so hard I could smell the burning rubber. My heart pounded like a war drum. I jumped out of the car, blood rushing to my ears.
"What the hell were you doing in the middle of the road?!" I barked, rushing toward her.
She stood there, trembling slightly, holding a leather handbag close to her chest. Her lips parted in shock, her eyes glassy.
I waited. "Well? Are you deaf? Are you going to say something or just stand there like a ghost?"
She flinched, and then barely whispered, "I-I'm sorry."
Something about her voice tugged at me, but I clenched my jaw and nodded stiffly.
"It's alright. Just-be more careful next time."
She gave a sharp little nod and started walking across the road again. But just before disappearing from my sight, she turned halfway and mumbled, "Drive slower next time. You might end up killing someone and be blamed for it too."
I blinked, stunned.
"What did you just say?" I asked.
But she didn't even bother to look back.
She walked away. Ignored me. Me-Jeon Jungkook.
No girl had ever done that. Not without regretting it.
That face... those eyes. That was Y/n L/n. No doubt about it now. And now I had two reasons to find her.
I got back into my car, my smirk long gone. This girl was gutsy, reckless, and now she was at the top of my list. I drove towards the university gate and parked just outside. No one dared to stop me. They never did. They knew who I was-their king in suits and shadows.
I entered the main hall and made my way to the lift, and just as the doors opened-
There she was.
Standing there with her earphones in, humming to herself. Carefree. Oblivious to everything, including the man she had just insulted-twice-in the same hour.
I stepped into the elevator with her, the tension instantly thickening. She didn't even look at me. Didn't flinch. Just stared straight ahead, music still playing.
That was it. My frustration boiled over.
I reached out and grabbed her shoulders, not harshly-but firm enough to make her spin around.
Her eyes went wide, her lips parting in disbelief as she yanked her earphones out.
"What the hell-" she began, but I cut her off.
"What did you mean back there on the road?" I asked sharply. "That I might kill someone and be blamed for it? Is that some kind of sick joke?"
She narrowed her eyes, defiance flashing through her like lightning.
"Are you stalking me or something?" she thundered, stepping back, arms folded over her chest.
My eyes narrowed.
"Stalking you? Please. Don't flatter yourself."
"Then why the hell are you here, cornering me in elevators and yelling at me like some lunatic?"
I stepped closer, voice cold but soft. "Because you made my sister cry."
Her eyes faltered. Just a blink-but I saw it.
I continued, my voice dropping lower. "Jae-hee. You made her cry. And that's not something I let slide."
She looked at me, puzzled but trying not to show it. "I didn't even say anything cruel-she insulted me first. I just gave it back. Fair and square."
I stared at her, breathing through my nose. My anger, my curiosity, and something else-something darker-all mixing into a confusing storm.
"Y/n L/n," I said slowly, tasting her name like poison and honey on my tongue. "You're going to regret that."
She met my gaze without flinching. "Try me, Jeon Jungkook."
The elevator dinged open.
And just like that, she walked away-again.
But this time, I didn't stop her.
Because I had made up my mind.
She was dangerous. And so was I.
But only one of us could win this game.
