I can't even remember the last time I saw sunlight. It must be at least eight years since they tossed me in here, or maybe twelve. I can't tell. When you're locked in a cell with no windows, one tends to lose track of time, especially when all you got is a mattress filled with cement and a tin can.
"All prisoners report to the Food Court!" Oh, goodie, the speakers still work. Maybe if I'm lucky I can smuggle a knife back to my cell. My heavy metal cell door slowly starts to open with an occasional squeak or creak, I get up off the cold stone floor and walk out into the long hallway with cell doors lined up along the cold grey stone walls. I look up and see the guards watching us on the balcony; they're paying very close attention to Bones. He's a big guy - about seven feet tall and real strong, I hear his cell has two metal doors instead of just one. Heck, they should make it three, I once saw him punch a hole in the wall so big I could curl up inside it, and I'm six foot eight. As I walk down the hall sticking my hands into the pockets of my gray prison uniform, the one where the sleeves are gone after a fight with a guy who tried jumping me but I found a guy who attached a hood to it, so all is good, I overhear a small group of troublemakers talkin' 'bout an escape plan. I take a quick look at the guards to make sure they didn't hear anything, of course still watching Bones, I ain't a snitch so I'll let it slide. I walk in the sorry excuse for a food court; it's pretty big with a high ceiling, and the white tile walls are covered in dents from fights that tend to break out. I grab a bowl and get in line for the slop they call food, I get in line and as usual I get slop just like everyone else. Wait. I pause as one of the cafeteria workers places some fresh bread in my bowl, I walk over to an empty table in the far corner of the court that's out of the way. Just how I like it.
"Hey, Cody!" Aw, crud. I turn around.
"Hey, Bones, what can I do for you, or did you just want to show everyone you actually know how to speak English?" I say as a smirk comes across my face.
"The bread. Hand it over or I'll snap your skinny legs off," he says as he walks over to me pointing at the bread on top of my bowl of slop.
"No, thanks. I'm good," I say as I turn around and walk over to the table. Suddenly I feel Bones grab my shoulder, spin me around, and pin me to the wall.
"Maybe you didn't hear me, Warden. Now you gots one last chance to fork it over or I'll ram your head into the stone wall till you don't breathe no more," he says with a very angry look on his face. I could've said something back, but then I heard a familiar voice.
"Hey, leave him alone Bones!" someone yells. Me and Bones both turn to see who the idiot is.
"You must be new, so I'll let you off with a warning, pipsqueak. Now buzz off before I decide to pound you too," Bones says as he increases the pressure he's putting into pushing me against the wall.
"Put him down," the guy says. Bones tosses me to the ground, making me drop my food and ruin the bread, and it wasn't stale this time either. Oh, Bones is so dead.
"Watch it, new blood," Bones says as he walks over to the guy. I get to my feet and slowly walk up behind him, and just as he raises his fist, I give the guy a quick jolt of my head as a sign that says 'Get out of the way!!!' and I tackle Bones to the ground just as the guy jumps out of the way. Me and Bones slam on to the hard floor. Bones throws me off and charges, and right before he hits me, that guy and about three others tackle him out of the way. Suddenly I hear the guards coming. About five or so rush in and begin to restrain Bones with chains and cuffs, he tries to shake them off but he's pushed to the ground with a dull thud, and they haul him off, most likely to see the warden.
"You're welcome." I turn around and there he is, one of the guys who was talkin' about breaking out of this dump.
"Name's Mark," he says. He extends his hand to shake. I just push it aside.
"Didn't need help, newblood," I say. Odd, he must have been here for at least a year. Around this place I find it best just to look out for no one but myself and only help myself.
"It sure looked like you needed it, but my bad. Bet you had him right where you wanted him, eh Cody?" Mark says with a small chuckle.
"First off, I'd act a little nicer to the guy who overheard you discussing an escape plan, and secondly, what do you want?" I say.
"Look, me and my pals over there actually want to know if you're interested in joining our little escape," he says. Interesting, no one's ever actually done anything for me or offered me anything. I usually just stay as far from other people as possible, and now he's asking me to help him. Crud. I hate owing people,
"Alright. I'll help in your little escape, but never again will you call me Cody. You will call me Lee. Got it, shorty?" I ask.
"Lee?" Mark says. I just stare down at him.
"Yeah, my name is Cody Lee Warden," I state bluntly.
"Was Lee your father or something?" Mark asks curiously.
"No one important," I say, trying as hard as I can to not show that I wish I knew. I don't know my family, and I don't think I want to, but every now and then I think, maybe.
"Anywho, come on over with me and my guys. We'll explain the plan," he says with a rather devious smile as we walk over to a table with his buddies waiting for us.
Several hours later the guards herd us like cattle back to our cells. I lay down on my so-called mattress and wait. Several hours of waiting, and it was time to activate the first phase of the plan. I pull a small bag of green pills out of my pocket and wedge some under the door and pull a lighter out of my other pocket. I click it a few times and I finally get a spark and place the flame close to the pills, and they immediately start to turn into a small puddle of acid that quietly eats away at the door and soon there's a hole large enough for me to slip through, I sneak out into the hall and see a single guard walking by. I quickly wrap my arm around his neck and my hand over his mouth and keep it there 'til he passes out. I shove him in my cell and get his keys. I start making my way to where Mark said his cell is. I see a light at the end of the hall and a guard walks around the corner. I quickly look around for a place to hide but I can't find a single place. I pull up my hood and keep walking towards the guard, and once he sees me he yells
"What are you doing outside of your cell scumbag?"
"Just takin' an evenin' stroll," I reply cooly with a smirk. "You got a problem with that?"
"Yeah I do now come quietly and maybe I won't send you to the whipping post for the tenth time this month." he says with a evil smile and walks closer to me takin' out his cuffs. I run up to him and tackle him to the ground making him drop the cuffs and the flashlight. He pushes me off and takes out a taser. good thing I actually did smuggle that knife, I pull out a small metal knife that I got from the food court. He charges at me and I quickly get up and throw the knife and it lands right in his throat causing him to crumble to the ground. People might have heard that little argument. I quickly run down the hall not bothering to hide the body. Eventually I get to Mark's cell and slip the key into the slot and hear a small click and the door slides open.
"'Bout time," Mark says with a smirk "I was beginning to think you got caught."
"Well there was a guard and, well lets just say he's taken care of." I say with a sly smile.
"I can tell judging by the blood on your arm." he points out.
"Come on lets move we've got some friends of ours to collect." I reply. After getting his buddies out, we start to sneak to the cargo docs. As we get closer I can feel my heartbeat going faster and louder with each step I take. We come across the large room that resembles the size of a stadium. We head for the closest truck and hop into the back and hide among the crates of supplies and what not.
"Thanks for helping us pull this off," Mark says to me. I turn and give a smile. I haven't smiled since, well, ever.
"No problem," I say.
"You know, whether you like it or not, you're a member this little family now, and we look after each other," he says with a smile coming across his face. Family. Never thought I'd ever have one. I always thought you only needed yourself.
"I think this family is gonna be the best thing that ever happened to me," I say just as we hear the driver get in and start the truck. Well, I'm finally gonna see the sun.
