Jude's fingers, ensconced in gloves thinning with age, grew painfully numb. The frosty tendrils of the night's breath found their way through the worn seams, causing a sharp, biting chill that clawed at his skin. A sigh escaped his lips, turning into mist, hanging in the frigid air that dissipated into the darkness of the night. The cold had never bothered Jude before, it was an entirely new feeling to him. When he had been Elander, he'd never been bothered by the cold before. But Elander was gone. What was left was only Jude.
A glance at the huge city screens, lighting up the late night, sent a wave of sorrow through Jude. The screens flashed with images of the hero, with an achingly familiar pose Jude had always struct. It seemed to scream at him, asking him why he'd let that gang of robbers kill him. Asking him why he'd abandoned his country. Why he died. Jude tore his eyes away from the screen, quick enough to catch a family huddled together. A boy who looked about eight murmured to his dad, " Daddy, Elander's dead! Who's gonna save us now?"
His father ruffled his hair, grimacing deeply, " The army and the police will." But he looked unsure of it himself. No they won't! Jude felt like arguing. The army and police were all too weak. Their country needed a bold hero- a man who used to be Elander.
