Transcription of original recording:
In this transcription, both parties (Imogen Howard & Detective Jay Davis) are referred to by their last name.Howard: Hello officer, is there something I can help you with?
Davis: I just have some questions. Is it alright that I record this conversation?Howard: Well, of course. What is this about?
Davis: It's about your neighbors, the Jennings family.Howard: Are they alright? Did something happen? Was it a break-in? I warned Mr.Jennings that they needed to add a new lock on their back gate just last week. Such a lovely family they need to protect themselves.
Davis: I can't go into details right now. But it wasn't a break-in. Can you tell me more about their back gate though?Howard: Their damn lock latch is broken. The sound of the gate opening and closing and opening and closing in the wind keeps me up half the night.
Davis: I'm sorry to hear that. I'll ask Mr.Jennings if he can get that fixed soon for you. Now, about the gate. Have you noticed anyone who isn't supposed to be hanging around it? Or around the neighborhood?Howard: No, but if there was anyone I would have noticed. I retired 10 years ago so I like to spend the days sitting in my garden. I get to watch the birds and people as they come and go.
Davis: Were you in your garden yesterday afternoon?Howard: Yes, I like to give flowers to the schoolchildren as they walk by on their way home. Sadly, there aren't a lot of little ones left on this street. So many have gone and grown up already.
Davis: Did you see Ivy Jennings come home?Howard: Well, of course, I chatted with the girl from the moment she stepped out of her car to the moment she stepped into their house.
Davis: Around what time was that?Howard: What time was what?
Davis: What time did you see Ivy come home?Howard: Oh, sometime between 2:30 and 3. It's hard to say. When you get to my age time starts to escape you.
Davis: But you are sure you saw her go into the house?Howard: Saw who?
Davis: Ivy JenningsHoward: Lovely girl, she is. She and her sister always offer to help me pick the weeds from my garden. The parents are hardly around though, it's a shame. I worry about those girls being alone so often. The back gate is broken, you know? Anyone could break in. I told Mr.Jennings just last week he needs to get that fixed.
Davis: Right, you mentioned that.Howard: Did I? I swear when you get to my age, time just escapes you.
Davis: It's alright, let's try and get back to what you were saying. You said you saw Ivy Jennings coming home.Howard: Well, of course. I was in my garden. Since I retired 15 years ago I started spending my days outside so I can watch the children and the birds.
Davis: Right, did you see Ivy leave the house after she went inside?Howard: When?
Davis: Yesterday afternoon.Howard: I wasn't outside yesterday, it was raining.
Davis: I thought you said you saw Ivy.Howard: Who?
Davis: Ivy Jennings. She's your neighbor's daughter.Howard: I think you're confused. My neighbors don't have any kids. If they did, I would know. I see everyone that comes by. Since I retired 5 years ago I started spending the days sitting outside in my garden.
Davis: Right, uhm- thank you so much for all your help. I think you've answered every question.Howard: Well, of course, I'm glad I could help.
