Mystic Falls: 2010

Lorelei's POV:

I'm lying on the couch when Rebekah storms in. Her blonde ponytail whips back and forth as she paces angrily. Out of the months I've known her, I'm not sure if I've ever seen her so enraged. Before I can decide if I even have the time to wonder if I should get in the middle of whatever this is, she starts in.

"I haven't spoken to Elijah in three days."

I roll over onto my stomach and prop my head up with my arms in order to see her better.

"Bek he takes off all the time. Why don't you just-" I begin

"Don't tell me what to do!" She snaps, fangs out, eyes dark with blueish veins running down the soft skin beneath her eyes

I hold up my hands in surrender.

No need to piss her off more.

"Nik must be behind this. I just know it!"

"Okay so we could go confront him which would end up with you daggered in a box alongside Kol leaving me all alone or we could hunt Elijah down ourselves."

Rebekah considers these options for a long moment.

"We split up. Cover as much ground as we can before my brother returns."

"Okay."

I grab one of Elijah's shirts and we head out the door. Rebekah quickly vamp-speeds us into town and we take off in separate directions.

I head towards the Town Square.

If I can't find him around town maybe I'll head up to the clock tower.

There are people scattered about all over the place. Couples holding hands, mothers holding wailing toddlers, etc.

I didn't think it would be so busy right now.

Maybe this will provide me with an escape if Nik just so happens to be walking around..

I move past the crowds and head somewhere a little more secluded.

I didn't see him in the groups of people walking about. Where the hell is he?

I put his shirt up to my nose and breathe in deeply. Then I tuck it into my pocket and focus.

But there's nothing.

Not even as I walk up and down the streets or enter restaurants and shops.

I can't risk asking anyone.

As part of Nik's security measures, he's compelled humans to spy for him.

To keep an eye out for his enemies.

Or to rat me out.

It was a risk being in town but it was one I knew we had to take. Without Elijah by his side, Nik would fly off the handle and do something drastic. The last time something like this happened, Kol and Nik went at it after Kol went on a rampage. Nik snapped his brother's neck and confined him. He and Elijah spent the rest of the day burying or burning bodies and compelling townspeople.

The first thing Nik had done when he moved here was to compel the Town Council to burn all of the vervain (a plant that can be used to prevent compulsion a.k.a. mind control, a gift, that vampires possess)

Sick of his brother's behavior , Elijah had been gone more often than he was home.

Avoiding him.

We all knew better than to get in Nik's way.
