"Sir! I have urgent news. The count has sent soldiers from Ilonleena! They're only a day away from us!" Celrith, Raith and I were having a discussion in the basement tavern when a visibly distressed soldier wearing a yellow uniform decorated with a black cross in the chest piece (Which was the new uniform for our resistance in order to differentiate us from the count's soldiers. It also happens that the uniform matches my black robes with gold highlights, which was a nice touch) barged down the stairs. I recognized this particular soldier as a scout who watched the roads for any movement. Sometimes the scouts spotted monsters on the road which we dealt with, but this was the first time we've been alerted of any human movement
"Well it has been over a week since we've decided to resist Count Ilhallis. We knew this would happen eventually. How many are there?" Celrith asked, looking serious in his brand new robes ,dyed yellow with a black cross in the middle, just like what the soldiers wore.
"Sir! I counted 300 troops, including some of those mages. Also, while I didn't get a good look at them, I saw a couple siege engines. Catapults and balistae I think." The soldier delivered his answer more calmly than when he entered the room.
"Hmmph. They've brought in the big stuff. I hope you two know what our next course of action is?" Ralith said
"We are to evacuate everyone out of town and move into the forest east of here." I delivered sharply
"Then we move through the forest and once we're north of Ilonleena, we will launch a surprise attack at night." Celrith continued my sentence
"You there, soldier" Ralith pointed at the soldier
"Yes sir!"
"Tell everyone to prepare to evacuate and meet at the town square. We leave at midday" Ralith ordered
"Sir!"
"You two, with me. The three knights should be training the militia in the town square right about now, let's go and tell them the news. I shall find Mathra and we will be off. Make sure you bring everyone you need with you. Now then, follow me!" Ralith walked off as Celrith and I trailed behind him.
Outside the sun was shining, but that hardly stopped the town's gloomy feel. Rather, it made the residue of the purple mist all the easier to see. Not to mention you can faintly smell the stuff, and it doesn't smell good. It reeks like death, like the rotting corpse of a dead animal. That smell is ever present in this town, always faint enough not to be a problem but always strong enough that you could smell death in the air. In the middle of the town square there was a formation of common people practicing drills. We thought it necessary to teach the civilians how to fight and although they're no match for a proper soldier, they could defend themselves if need be or maybe kill some low threat monsters that roam the countryside, and are notorious for living in the forests. Ralith approached the three knights, Trindus, Mested and Christa who were at the forefront of the formation. Mested noticed us and turned around to greet us "Ralith. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I'm afraid we've little time for formalities. I need you to round up every civilian here and get them ready for evacuation"
