I awoke with a jump. My head hurt, my leg hurt and my left side was numb. I couldn't even move. I stared up at the ceiling, it was an unfamiliar ceiling. White. Just pure white. I went to move my toes and I had an awful pain that stopped me. I saw it wrapped in a white cast, and elevated with a blue strap that hung from the stop of the cieling. I saw my mom sitting in the corner; she was alseep. Her eyes were puffy and red, and she wore no makeup. She was wearing a blue t-shirt and sweats. I couldn't believe that. I went to look to my left, but I couldn't. It hurt to much to move my head. I looked down at my hand, I had a random clip thingy on my finger. I was almost sure it was taking my pulse. What happened? When I looked at the light I had a flashback. Back to the car  getting closer and closer, then the memory jumped, to seeing those tail lights, speeding away. I moaned very loudly. Louder than I ever had. I was shocked.

I had to try. I went to talk. "Heeh.. Heell.. Hello" I shocked myself. I said something. "M-M-Mom?" She awoke with a start."Oh darling, you're awake! The doctors weren't sure if you ever would!" She came over and hugged me, stil crying. "Mom.." I said."Miranda! You spoke! I must be dreaming! DOCTOR!! DOCTOR!!" She yelled. A man in a white coat rushed in . "Is everything okay? Oh, Miranda, you're awake!" He said, noticing I was there. "Yes, she's awake, but she spoke." My mom said awful quietly. He turned to me, "Miranda, can you speak again?" He said, staring at me awkwardly. I swallowed hard. "Ye-ss" I said,  content with myself. "My goodness, This has never happened under my supervision before. There are two recorded cases of regaining vocal ability at this hospital. Ever." He scribbled something on his notepad. "Miranda, what day is it?" I struggled to remember. "I'm..not sure" I answered. "Okay that's fine. What year is it?" He scribbled down more notes. "Two thousand.... and... Thirteen" I finally spat out. "What colour is your mom's shirt?" He scirbbled, then glaring up at me ."Blue." I wanted to answer , I'm not five you know, but my mom would shoot me. "Wow, Miranda. Okay. Now watch the tip of this pen." He pulled out a pen, Pointing to the top end. He slowly got closer and closer to my nose with the pen. I followed it like he said. "Look to the left, then slowly to the right with just your eyes, Do not move your neck." I did that as well. "Miranda, I think you just might be a miracle case. You see, you had a concussion. At I'm not going to sugar coat it, it was so bad, anyone else would have died or stayed in a permanent coma, or even have woken up but had brain damage. As soon as you got here you were checked for brain damage. You seem to have none. And you are quite obviously alive and awake. But , you still have quite a bit of recovery ahead of you. I hate to tell you , but you might be here for a month. At the most a month and a half. Which could be worse. " He shrugged. "Do you have any questions?" He asked. "How can I... talk?" I asked, my voice cracking half way through. " I believe what happened is that when you were born , your vocal cords were tangled, if that makes sense, and when you were hit, they must have untangled. but they must not be perfect yet, because your voice cracks. but they will get better with time. Are there any other questions?" I shooke my head. "Okay call for me if you need something." He shook my moms hand then left.

"Mom..." I whined. " I know sweetie... I know.." She hugged me.

"My legs hurt......, my head.... hurts, my si..de is numb and I just fee..l awful. Why?" I asked

"Sweetie, you broke your leg in nine places. It's going to hurt, and you have 2 broken ribs. That were dosed with pain meds. Obviously your head hurts because of your concussion."

"I can't believe... I can talk." I was so overwhelmed. I pinched my arm, shut my eyes as tight as I could but I didn't wake up. This was for real. I couldn't even believe it. "I'm not drea..ming" I laughed.

I looked to my left and saw none other than Collin Jake. He dropped the flowers he was holding. He said four words, but they re-played in my head.

"Miranda... you can talk!"
