Linh could not remember for how long she had been bullied. She couldn't understand why. She didn't look ugly by any means with her dark hair and maybe slightly short height. Her mother had always told her that their grandfather came from Asian descent and grandmother was American.
She did look a bit different from most people. She was a third part from Chinese origin, which was noticeable in her facial features. She felt neither one nor the other, many days she felt like a freak. She lived with her mother in Michigan but had to leave America behind for studies.
It was her first week at Oxford university and she had been hoping to put her horrible time at high school behind her. Unfortunately, she had felt outcast even in this place.
She sat down on a lone chair in the classroom and felt some boys and girls giggling behind her.
"Here she comes, freak" Linh felt her throat tighten.
The word continued to haunt her ever since America. Maybe there was something wrong with her? Was there someone who could tell her what she was doing wrong?
She opened her book and waited for the teacher to start the lesson. She longed to go home, she wanted to go to her little house and crawl under a blanket and never see or hear anyone.
As the class drew to an end, she continued her way to the library. It was the only place she felt safe in the entire school. There she felt out of reach from any stares or threats. It was quite a huge library with thousands of books.
She wrote a quick text message to her mother then she concentrated on writing her sociology essay. She took a short break to drink from her coffee and a few bites from her sandwich. The librarian approached her. "Dear, we are closing now. You have been sitting here all afternoon." Linh bit her lip.
"Please give me 15 more minutes, I need to finish this task. Its deadline tomorrow please..."
The librarian sighed and gave her a look of pity. "You get 15 minutes exactly. I can't really let students stay that late" She handed over a big key. "You seem like a responsible girl. Close the front door when you are done and make sure the lights at your table are off before you leave".
When Linh was finally done, she walked out of the library and turned around to lock the door, when she felt a hand on her mouth. She was brought back inside. She pulled her hand away and turned to see two guys and a girl staring at her viciously. To her horror, she realized it was her gang of bullies from class.
"There you are freak, we've been looking for you all over the school in every corner," Said the one guy named Christoffer.
"Ugh, what is she wearing? That mouth is bigger than a frog's" the girl told her as she stared at her with disgust. The guy next to her just grinned. She felt two hands on her and she was thrown backwards and landed on her back.
"You don't stare at us, you understand that?" said Christoffer. He hunched in front of her. "I'm the one who owns this place and I'm the one who takes the final grades with me. Not some freak like you understood!"
"Now be a good girl and stay here until tomorrow comes. If you dare to report any of this worse things will come"
With that, he pushed Linh's shoulder again and left her with his gang. It became dark and quiet in the library. A tear ran down her cheek. When she suddenly heard a book fall from a shelf. She jumped in fright. Then the sound of several books falling down was heard. Linh started screaming.
She couldn't breathe. Too many books were covering her mouth and legs. Her whole body was covered in it. She tried to break free her hands but couldn't get through the weight of all the books. This was it. She was going to die, she wasn't going to make it.
When Linh woke up she was confused, lying in a pool of water. She heard the sound of rushing water. She looked around and was surprised to see a small stream. On each side of the stream was a beautiful covering of grass. Large oak trees cast beautiful shadows from the sunshine.
She stood up slowly, wondering if her three bullies had thrown her into the woods. She pinched her arm and winced. No, this wasn't a dream. It was real. She took two big strides across the stream, leaving small waves behind her and jumped onto the lawn. To her horror she came face to face with something she had never seen before.
The most giant lion she had ever seen.
