I stared at the stars., enjoying the quiet around me. This only lasted for about 15 minutes before my phone buzzed.

From- Phil :D
hi dan... sorry for leaving in such a rush

My mind couldn't hold back the giggly blush colouring my face.

To- Phil :D
don't worry about it

In reality, I was slightly worried, considering he was so shaken up about something.

From- Phil :D
alright, thanks. so what's up?

To- Phil :D
nm, just got back on the roof, wbu?

From- Phil :D
my dad just yelled at me for being late, no big deal

To- Phil :D
oh crap, sorry bout that

The feeling of guilt crept into my body, it's my fault he got yelled at. I should've just taken him home sooner.

From- Phil :D
oh don't worry, I'm used to it

To- Phil :D
that doesn't make it less terrible

From- Phil :D
sometimes it does

To- Phil :D
not all the time though

I didn't want him to feel bad, I never wanted him to feel bad, even though he might say it doesn't get to him.

From- Phil :D
listen I would love to stay and talk, but I need to sleep&I'm not supposed to be up rn :/

To- Phil :D
oh okay, goodnight Phil, see you tomorrow at lunch?

From- Phil :D
definitely ^-^

To- Phil :D
okay ^.^ goodnight

From- Phil :D
goodnight c:

I turn off my phone and rest it on my chest, lying back down onto the duvet, looking back up into the sky. I hope he isn't in too much trouble because of me. The thought makes me sick to my stomach. I watch the stars, slowly drifting off to sleep.

•••

I awake the next morning to a cool breeze and the weird noises I have my alarm set to. I sit up and stretch back, slight discomfort in my lower back from falling asleep on the roof (not the first time.) I look at the beautiful London sunrise, the roof providing a great view. The colours are magnificent. The way they all magically blend together.

I stand up, grabbing my duvet and phone and sliding back into my window. After throwing the blanket into a heap on the floor, I quickly check my parents room to see if they're home.

Just to my surprise, empty.

After taking a quick shower and brushing my teeth, I sigh in content and hop down the stairs then into the kitchen to grab some breakfast. I grab a random granola bar, scarfing it down, then grabbing my bag and my keys and begin to head outside to my car.

•••

First block went by slowly, then second block even slower. But when the bell rang for lunch, I sprang up and and headed towards the door, trying to leave.

"Daniel? May I speak with you for a moment?" Mrs. William calls out to me right after the bell rung. I silently groan and stomp my way to her desk.

"Yes?" I ask politely.

She takes off her glasses, revealing her slightly wrinkled skin.

"You seemed very distracted during class today. You didn't take any notes and I don't even think you knew what the lesson was about." She says calmly. I look down and twiddle my thumbs.

"Dan, is everything alright?" She asks sincerely.

I look up surprised. "What do you mean?" I ask cautiously.

"Dan, I've had you in my class since you we're in Grade 8, and not once have I ever met your parents." She explains.

My face gets hot.

"Well, I-I'm sorry for not pa-paying attention, but it isn't about that." I say, stumbling on my own words. She looks at me sympathetically and hands me the school counselor's card.

"I understand, but if you ever need someone to talk to, Ms. Riggs is wonderful at her job." She says with a gentle smile. I hesitate for a moment, but then take the card and shove it in my pocket.

"Thank you Mrs. William." I say without looking at her.

"Anytime, Daniel, now go enjoy your lunch." She says before looking down at the papers she was grading. I nod and head out the classroom, closing the door behind me.

That was strange, but slightly comforting, a teacher has never noticed something like this before.

When I finally get into the cafeteria, I see PJ, Chris, and Phil all sitting at our usual table and, lucky for me, Phil saved me a spot beside him. I make my way to the table and sit beside Phil. They were having a conversation on one of PJ's school projects.

"Hi Dan." They say.

"Hi guys! PJ, what're you on about now." I ask, laughing.

"Well, I'm glad you've asked. I have this great idea for a movie! A boy who has to stay and work at his uncle's hotel while he studies to be a doctor, but the hotel is full of imaginary creatures and monsters." He explains with a look of passion in his eyes.

"Sounds difficult." Chris mumbles with a mouth full of chicken nuggets. PJ shrugs.

"One day, I guess." He says, returning to his own food.

"Wait, Dan, what took you so long?" Phil asks, chiming in on conversation. I shrug, not wanting to tell them what happened with Mrs. William.

"My teacher just wanted to talk to me about something" I mumble, not looking at him

"Alright." Phil mutters.

"Wait, its quiet... Too quiet... Where's Amber? She's usually bugging me by now." I say.

"Oh yeah, she came by earlier, we told her you were sick." Chris says with a laugh.

"Thank God!" I exclaim.

"Hey Dan, are you busy after school?" Phil whispers to me, his breath tickling my neck. Chris and PJ were already engaged in their own conversation. My heart thumps faster and faster.

"No, why?" I ask giddily.

"Because... I want to tell you something important." He says seriously.

"Okay, meet me at the front of the school, we can go to the park or something." I say back to him.

He smiles. "Okay, great."
