"Erm, 'Cero... Why are you reading?"
Lucero looks up, startled at the sudden voice of their younger sister, Carmen.
"If you must know, i've started this book long ago and when I saw it, I felt bad that I forgot about it so I started reading it and now i'm hooked."
Carmen looked at the dirty blonde, narrowing her eyes.
"So you started reading, because you felt bad for the book?"
She looks at Carmen with a smile, nods then goes back to reading the book. It was "Macbeth" By William Shakespeare, Lucero adored her literature.
"You're so weird." Carmen rolled her eyes and walked out of her sisters room with a deep sigh.
They continued reading until they finished; when they did, they realised it had been 3 hours.
"Oh damn, maybe I should stop before mum gets angry that I didn't do anything."
Helena Escarra was not a pleasant person when angered, she was known for her cunning wit and sharp tongue but she was also a lovable member of the Encanto, it was unusual for her to lose temper in public. But people who experienced her show-down knew to never anger her again.
She owned a bakery and pattiserie in the centre of town that was the most popular- mainly because there was no other ones- but also because it had an absolutely delicious carrot cake in the harvest season.
It was also known for it's famous "Lucero Mirangue" which is basically mirangue but made by Lucero, everyone found it amazing and always recommended it- so Lucero kept on making it until she was a full-time member of the bakery.
"Lucero! Get your ass down here please!"
She peeks her head out onto the corridor, a bewildered expression conquering her face.
"Mum, you can't say ass and please in the same sentence!"
"Did you just swear at me Miss Escarra?"
She starts to sweat, laughing nervously she replies no and heads downstairs at the speed of light.
Okay maybe not that fast, but it was faster than normal.
"Hello dear mother, what causes your problem?"
"You."
"Excellent, I shall remove myself right now."
She sends her mum finger guns as she rolls her eyes.
"It was a joke- anyway I need you to cover the bakery today, i'm down with a sprained ankle."
"But can't you just ask-"
"And i'm not asking Julieta. Poor woman already has a lot on her head, no need for me to distract her."
Lucero nod their head agreeing. Her mother and Julieta are bestfriends- Helena visiting the Madrigal would just cause her to become distracted and mess up. Or something.
"Fine, but I get payed for this day?"
"You get paid for everyday."
"Mother dearest, it's a Saturday. I work Monday to Wednesday. I only get paid for those three days, I need payment for this Saturday on next week's paycheck please."
"You'll get it. Just go, you're making my ankle worse."
"Huh? How?"
"By giving me a massive headache, now scoot."
"Alright, alright."
Lucero walks (runs) out of the living room where her mother was right now resting her leg. She picks up the keys to the house and bakery, then checks her watch.
"What the actual fuck, it's already 4pm?" She whispers to herself
"I HEARD THAT!" Her mum shouts from the living room.
"NO YOU DIDN'T!" She shouts back.
She opens the door and locks it as she leaves. It was summer and Señora Pepa seemed to be in a good mood, so it was light and extremely hot outside.
They finally got to the bakery and saw that it was packed. People were chatting at tables, the queue came out of the main door and nearly around the whole white and blue painted building.
"Ugh, mum better pay me extra." Lucero grumbles as they step inside.
The place gets quiet, the staff however keep on moving- not noticing that their boss' daughter just showed up.
The bakery starts cheering and clapping, little children go up to hug the 21-year-old and she suddenly sees Antonio, along with Juancho and a couple other classmates of his.
Not far from Antonio, she sees her best friend Dolores, covering her ears from the noise.
Instantly when seeing that they tell everyone to quiet down, obviously no one noticed poor Dee.
Everyone instantly shuts up. Luz had major respect in town- not only had they passed with the end of school tests with the highest marks in the entirety of Encanto, but also had saved a baby Antonio from death, to which Pepa still thanks her to this day. Even thought that was 3 years ago-
"Dee, my bestie! How are you?"
"Doing fine Luz, I have a question to ask you though."
"All ears."
"You've never been to visit the Casa Madrigal have you?"
"Erm . . ." The dirty blonde scratched their neck in thought.
"Not to my knowledge, no."
Dolores smirked and she called Antonio over.
"Hi Cero!"
"Hi Tonito! Excited for your big night soon?"
"Mhm! You'll be there right?"
"Of course pequeño!" She ruffles his hair and he lets out a small squeal of excitement, hugs Lucero then runs off to his friends.
"You've been before- for the gift ceremonies remember?"
"Oh- yeah. I was young though, and we weren't friends yet."
"Well, I'm inviting you over. The ceremony is in a week or so's time, and we've already done everything. Plus," she smirked, "My cousins really wanna meet you."
Lucero furrowed her eyebrows.
"Cousins? Meet me?"
"Y'know- Mirabel, Luisa, Isa."
"The busy as fuck, flower making señorita perfecta Isabela?"
Dolores rolled her eyes at her best friend's words.
"Is there any other Isabela I have as a cousin that I don't know of?"
"I... don't think so?"
"Exactly. Anyway are you gonna come?"
"Well yeah obviously, your cousins are fucking awesome!"
Dolores laughes silently and takes Lucero's hand as she sits down.
"I'll notify them then, they better be in their best behaviour for you, eres importante aquí."
"No soy tan importante-"
"Oh, just shush."
Lucero stands back up.
"I gotta head to the counter, my mum's not gonna pay me for sitting around with my friends."
They laugh and share a quick hug
"Love you Luz, i'll see you soon"
"Love you too Dee, can't wait to meet your cousins."
