Hamilton was sitting at his desk, writing beside a brightly burning candle. Writing a letter to his lover by the name of John Laurens. Hamilton ended the letter with "Ever yours, Alexander". It has been months since Laurens' last letter to Hamilton and he was getting worried. But he couldn't say anything about it in fear their secret affair would get leaked. He got up from his desk with a sigh, walking over to his bed, feeling exhausted. He hasn't slept in days, worried something has happened to his lover. His worries finally slipped away as he drifted off to sleep.Hours turned into days, days turned to weeks, and not a single letter from Laurens. He felt his stomach sink, knowing something has happened to him. Hamilton tried to get those thoughts out of his head. But he just couldn't shake the feeling that something bad has happened to Laurens. With a loud splashing sound he filled a small glass with Whisky, hoping, praying that his paramour would contact him in any way.
The next day Hamilton checked his mailbox to see a letter. A wide smile spread across his face, thinking that it was from Laurens. Little does he know, this letter would break him. He happily walked back inside and cheerfully sat at his desk, happily opening the letter that he thought was from his closeted lover. But far from it, the letter read...
"On Tuesday the twenty-seventh, Lieutenant Colonial John Laurens was killed in a gunfight against British troops in South Carolina. These troops had not yet received word from Yorktown that the war was over. He's buried here until his family can send for his remains. As you may know, Lieutenant Colonial Laurens was engaged in recruiting three thousand men for the all-black military regiment. The surviving members of this regiment have been returned to their masters."
Hamilton felt his heart sink. Tears falling down his face, looking like waterfalls streaming down his cheeks. He was stunned at this information. He did not know what to do. His mind went fuzzy and so did his vision with tears filling his eyes. The man he loved with all his heart, was gone. He has never felt this much grief before. This letter left him feeling broken and empty, there was a hole in his heart that could *never* be filled.
