My whole body was shaking from excitement or nerves or maybe both. I walked into the kitchen and right out the patio doors to the deck out back. I keep repeating the speech I've rehearsed the entire walk home from school.
I spot my dad by the grill and I let out a sigh of relief when I notice that my older brother Travis and his side kick Gunner are nowhere in sight. Now is my chance. Dad's alone and with the boys not around I can usually sweet talk him in to whatever I want.
"Hey daddy, what smells so good out here?"
Dad looks up and raises his eye brow at me.. "Daddy, huh? This is going to expensive isn't it?"
I roll my eyes, he isn't wrong. Normally "Daddy" would mean I needed new cheerleading shoes or a new phone after I'd dropped it a million times.
"Weeeell, there's a boy that asked me to go on a date and I know that you said I couldn't date until I was 17 but it's a group date and everyone will be there and I've got good grades and I've been home before curfew every night this month and I..." Dad lifts his hand in the air to stop my nervous word vomit. He crosses his hands over his chest and that makes his large frame look even larger as he glares down at me.
"Say that again?" He says in a chilly tone.
"There's a boy that asked me on a group date and.." he cuts me off again. He is already shaking his head. " That's what I thought you said, what boy asked you out? Does your brother and Gunner know about this? Do they know this boy?" He's rambling and that's never a good sign.
As I open my mouth to answer, I hear the deep voice that I think about every time I close my eyes. "Do we know what boy?" Gunner stands looking directly at me. I try to avoid his deep brown eyes.
"Some boy has asked Alayna on a date"
Just then my knucklehead brother steps out onto the deck and asks "what are we talking about?".
Gunner with his hands on his hips and his eyes still on me says " Some guy asked Laynie out on a date"
My brothers face goes from happy go lucky to rage instantly. Suddenly I can feel the heat of all three pairs of eyes glaring at me.
"Who asked you on a date? Don't they know who your brother is?" Travis practically yells.
I roll my eyes and say " Jared Tanner asked me to go to the bonfire with him and a group of people and I really want to go" I turn my eyes to my dad with the best puppy dog eyes I can come up with.
"Jared Tanner? Isn't that the little baseball punk? Who the hell does he think he is?" Travis says.
Gunners glare almost makes my knees give out. I say " he plays baseball and he wasn't scared to ask me out despite knowing who you two are. He is just a regular sixteen year old guy who wants to take a regular girl to a bonfire. It's not quite the tragic event that you all have in your head"
" That's where your wrong Alayna, you aren't just some regular girl. You are my entire world. You are smart and beautiful and that boy has one thing on his mind."
Dad rubs a hand over his face and is mumbling to himself as he turns around and flips something on the grill. When he turns back around the look on his face tells me that I've won.
"Boys, we may not like it but Alayna is right. The boy did have the balls to ask her out despite knowing who her brother was. She's responsible and level headed and I don't think we can keep her from growing up and experiencing everything a teenage girl should experience. That includes her first date. So Alayna, the boy comes to the door to get you and he will come in to meet me and then we can go from there."
Travis and Gunner are LIVID. Neither of them say a word and I give dad the biggest hug and kiss on the cheek and I hurry inside to call my best friend Taylor to let her know that it's finally happening. I'm going on my first date!
But why, when I'm so excited can't I get those deep brown eyes out of my mind.
