Dobby couldn't remember a time when he didn't have a new bruise, blooming on his arm, or the last time he had a bath for that matter either. As he looked at his grubby reflection on the backside of a shiny, silver platter that he was cleaning, he thought about the first time that he had entered the Malfoy's manor. He had been a young and enthusiastic house elf then, and had just left home. His mother, an elderly, kind faced house elf had packed him a fruitcake and a flask of tea and he had set out on the journey to the family that his previous owner had send him to. He didn't know that he would be living in the terrible nightmare that was his life. The Malfoys were cruel and harsh. They didn't give him any space to so much as sneeze. If he had to put so much as a toe out of line he was punished severely. He had gotten used to ornaments being thrown at him and he had only narrowly missed the jinxes and curses that Draco Malfoy had aimed at him from the very first moment that he had stepped into the manor.

Dobby finished cleaning the platter that he had furiously scrubbing with a bottle of mrs Mc Melow's mold removing potion and walked over to put it back into the snarling cabinet that occupied the damp corner of the Malfoy's, malicious living room. As he opened the cabinet he heard voices approaching the room from the hallway. He hastily put the platter away and with a crack he apparated out of the room. Mr Malfoy would surely punish him greatly if he was found in the presence of a measly house elf when he had company. Dobby had learned this the hard way when he had entered a room occupied by Mr Malfoy and a young witch with dark, curly hair that looked as if not even a large bottle of 'Hairy Hair Habits' could get rid of. mr Malfoy had preformed a curse so cruel and excruciating that Dobby had begged him to just end it and kill him, but Mr Malfoy and just laughed and had made Dobby clean out the basement, which would not have been so bad it it were not for the mounds of human sized spiders that occupied the deep and dark part of the house.
Dobby had learned that listening outside of the doors provide useful to him as he was able to hear exactly was going on in the outside world and he was able to learn the secrets of You-Know-Who. He learned that Mr Malfoy was one of the head Deatheaters and this made him tread more carefully in the presence of his master.
