A sandy yellow cat stalked through the ferns of a forest. In the starlight a mouse hopped into view. The cat froze for an instant, then crouched ready to pounce. Then, she leapt into the cool night air. Just as she reached the arc of her pounce, a white cat came out of no where and scared the mouse. Starled, the sandy yellow cat landed awkwardly on the leaves. The white cat hissed as the yellow cat, Fawn, regained her paws.
"What wa-" Fawn started as the white cat slashed her air next to her ear. Fawn ducked and snarled.
"Who are you and why are you on my clan's territory?" the white cat hissed.
"Your what? Are you one of those warrior cats?" Fawn questioned.
"Yes. Now leave before the rest of my patrol gets here!"
"What if I wanna join this clan of yours?"
"We don't accept kittypets!" the warrior cat spat.
"I'm not a kittypet!" Fawn hissed. Just then a red cat, a tabby, and a black cat padded into the clearing.
"Who is this?" the red cat glared at Fawn. The tabby puffed up to twice her size and hissed, one paw up threateningly. The black cat just stared at her, of all these hostile felines, the black one struck her with interest.
"I said, who is this!" the red cat snarled.
"Just some kittypet I was going to chase off." the white cat shot back, eyes locked on Fawn.
"I'm not a kittypet," Fawn roared, "and besides, I asked to join your clan."
"Are you a good hunter?" the red cat asked, flicking her tail.
"Yes." Fawn said.
"Then why do you smell like towleg trash?" hissed the tabby.
"I've never been to a towleg city before, thought I could see what it's like. It was awful by the way."
"How good are you in a fight?" the white cat asked.
"Pretty good. Especially in close corners. I had to fight a lot for just a scrap of food back in the city." Fawn replied. The warrior cats looked at each other, ears twitching.
"Shadowpaw? Do you have anything to add?" the red cat asked the black cat.
"Yes. Why do you wish to join us, if we accept you?" Shadowpaw asked.
"A wise question for one so young." the white cat muttered. Fawn stopped to think for a moment. Why do I want to join these cats?
"I guess because I'm tired of being a loner, and for others thinking I'm weak for being alone."
Fawn stood tense as the four warriors stood around her. Finally the red cat look at her and said, "You may join us. I am Amberclaw, deputy of OakClan."
"I'm Frostfoot." the white cat said.
"I'm Squirrelstripe." replied the tabby.
"I'm Shadowpaw!" the black cat pipped up.
"I'm Fawn." Fawn purred, glad to know these cats' names.
"That's a weird name!" Shadowpaw meowed. Squirrelstripe gently cuffed him on his ear.
"If you wish to join us, you should take on a warrior name. But Redstar will decide if you can join us or not." Amberclaw turned back into the undergrowth. The others trotted after her, with Fawn running after them. These cats are fast! Fawn thought. They ducked under a log with some funky fungi on it, leaped over a clear stream with shinny fish swimming below, raced beside a dirt path made by twolegs, and crossed a smaller stream to reach their destination. To Fawn's surprise, the clan camp didn't seem as glorious as she had imagined. Instead in front of her sat a prickly mess of bramble and thorn bushes. There was a tiny dark hole that Fawn guessed was the entrance. Standing guard was a chubby orange tabby with one ear torn.
"Who's that?" the chubby cat growled. Are all clan cats this hostile? Fawn thought with a flick of her ear.
"Calm down Blazetail. This is Fawn, she wants to join us." Amberclaw purred.
"Good. The more warriors we have the sooner I can join the elders." grumbled Blazetail. Fawn bowed her head respectfully. Then the four warriors walked down a very prickly tunnel of bramble and into the camp. Fawn saw a stump of a tree in the center, and six dens made of ferns and more bramble. The cats in the clearing stopped and stared at Fawn. Fawn followed the cats to the center of the clearing. A large red cat sat in the shade of the tree stump. Amberclaw walked toward the red cat while Frostfoot signaled for Fawn to sit. The red cat, who Fawn guessed was Redstar, looked from her to Amberclaw. A chill went down Fawn's spine as Redstar looked at her with a cold stare. Finally he got up onto the stump and said,"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather below Great Stump for a clan meeting!" Then Fawn saw even more cats come out of the numerous dens to sit around the tree stump. Redstar continued as the last cat sat,"While on a patrol led by Amberclaw, Frostfoot found Fawn, a trespasser who who's he's to join OakClan. Fawn please step foward." Fawn stood shakily under so many eyes and walked toward Redstar. The tom's blue eyes bore into her as he asked,"Fawn, do you wish to learn the ways of a warrior and to protect this clan with the cost of your life?"
"I do." Fawn replied.
"Then I, Redstar leader of OakClan, ask my warrior ancestors to look down on this cat who wishes to join us watch over this apprentice as she learns the ways of I warrior. Fawn, your new name is Fawnpaw, mat Starclan light your path." with that Redstar touched his nose to Fawnpaw's head & Fawn paw purred. "Frostfoot will be your mentor. The clan meeting is over." And with that Redstar hopped down from the tree stump as many clan cats greeted and congratulated Fawnpaw on becoming a member of the clan.
"Hey Fawnpaw!" Shadowpaw pounced on her tail, "Come on, I'll show you around camp ok?"
"Ok." Fawnpaw replied after swatting him on the head playfully.
"Well, come on then!" Shadowpaw bounded away to a den with a flattish rock serving as it's roof. "This is the apprentices den, we eat over there by the grass and practice our moves over here in the sandy area." Just then a fluffy cream colored cat walked out and stretched.
"Who are you?" the cat asked.
"Creampaw, this is Fawnpaw. Fawnpaw, this is Creampaw." Shadowpaw twitched his wishkers.
"Pleasure to meet you, Fawnpaw." Creampaw said half-heartedly.
"Nice to meet you too, Creampaw." Fawnpaw said as sweetly as she could, just to annoy him. The fluffy cat rolled his greens eyes and walked off.
"Ok follow me, I'll show you all the other places. Over here is the nursery, where the queens take care of their kits." Shadowpaw pointed to a prickly den with an entrance smaller than the main camp entrance. "Over there is the warriors' den, where all the warriors sleep. With the nursery between the warriors' and apprentices den, it makes the queens feel ten times safer. Next to the warriors is the elder's den. Then there's the medicine cat's den, you go there is your sick or injured."
"Cool. So what do apprentices do?" Fawnpaw asked.
"We apprentices spend our time training. Oh one tip, always feed the elders before you eat. Ok, you do not want to get in trouble with Redstar! Trust me." Shadowpaw explained.
"Um...ok." Fawnpaw replied werrily. The two were back at the apprentices den, the moon was high above them.
"Get some rest, we have a long day tomorrow." Shadowpaw said over his shoulder as he entree the den. Fawnpaw yawned and flopped down on a soft pile of moss and leaves.
Where am I? Fawnpaw thought, "Hello?" Fawnpaw called out into the dark. A cat screeched behind her, a force knocked her off her paws. Blinded by the darkness and dust Fawnpaw felt hooves crush her. "Stampede!" Fawnpaw yowled to no one. A bright flash of light took the form of a cat, the strange cat started talking over the thunder of stampeding deer. "Warn them." the glowing she cat said. The dream ended there. Fawnpaw sat shakily in her nest of moss and leaves.
"Fawnpaw? You ok, you were kicking in your sleep." Shadowpaw mewed next to her.
"I don't know, I had a strange dream. It felt so real!" Fawnpaw whispered back.
"A lot of nightmares may seem like that," the dark tom replied, "try to get some sleep, it's almost dawn."
"Ok." Fawnpaw rested her head on her paws. What if the dream was real? Fawnpaw thought, staring at the den wall.
