This is a small drabble based on the idea "Gingerbread House Building" which was a rejected idea from Klapollo Week 2021. I didn't feel like throwing this away nor adding this into a bigger fic. So, I decided to play with it in a little drabble.
This is a modern au where Jin Zixuan, Jin Ling, and Jiang Yanli are all gathered in the kitchen to build a gingerbread house together, and shenanigans are ensuing. It's implied that Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan are both out of the picture as are Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng.
There's gingerbread dust all over the counter, frosting dappling her husband's cheeks, and a chorus of symphonic laughter.
Jiang Yanli thinks of home, years ago. And she remembers her parents, A-Cheng, and A-Ying crowding the table around a dilapidated gingerbread house. The boys insisted on more gumdrops, her father encouraged them, and Yanli and her mother tried to keep things clean. It's one of the last times they're together.
Frosting suddenly flies from her son's hands, completely missing Jin Zixuan.
"A-Ling!" she scolds, but can't hold her smile.
She's here with her new family. And she thinks this is okay.
