The Other Muslim Girl
I didn't mean to be rude. But I stared at her.
Her face was so sweet and pretty. So small and innocent. So cute. She was probably barely up to my shoulders.
I wanted to talk to her. But somehow I was too shy. I told myself to say something. After all, we're the only 2
muslims in the school.
It was the first day for Summerfield Intermediate. I was a Year 8 now. Still in the same stinky classroom. Still
stuck with the same gruffy teacher.
Mr. Mushroom, my teacher grumbled about saying he was firm and hard to please. This was entirely untrue, so
all the Year 7s with frightened little faces were obviously wasting their worries. I yawned.
I fixed my gaze on Aleeyah. That was her name. I felt my heart skip a beat. Another muslim girl.
I daydreamed as i gazed at her, dreaming that we were best friends, and went to each other's houses and
laughed like we'd known each other for more than a thousand years.
She caught my eye, and I quickly turned away, pretending to listen to the teacher's boring speech.
Oh, please Allah, make this sweet girl my friend!
She didn't say anything that day.

The next day, I was going to make a move.
Today, i would speak to her.
In our P.E lesson, we were doing high jump -which i suck at.
After I had my (failed) attempt i sat down on the floor beneath me. There were pleny of people to sit next to. But
Aleeya was all alone. So I sat next to her. She didn't take much notice of me. She didn't take much notice of
anyone.
I haven't seen Aleeya talk to anyone. Let alone anyone talking to her. How lonely she must be.
This was my chance.
I said bismillaheerah maneeraheem. I lightly tapped her leg.
She turned slowly, probably surprised someone wanted to talk to her.
I wanted to say; ' Assalaamu walaikum! I'm a muslim too!'
I was to shy.
"Are you muslim?" Well it was obvious but i had to start up the conversation somehow.
She nodded.
"I am too!"
Her eyes twinkled black and shone. Her smile opened a little key in my heart.
Marsahallah, she's so beautiful.
She smiled. For the first time.
