"...as their Oiran,"

I feel every inch of my body get as cold as ice. I slapped my face trying to check if I was dreaming. I was fully conscious. I heard everything... and I heard it right.

I hear his angered voice again, "Do you understand how important it is? You woman? I have spent thousands if not a million Yen on your fees and her training! 12 years! She's been training for 12 Years now!"

His tone is as angered and impatient as ever..."Yoshimasa will elect his Commander-in-chief for the pacification of the West next spring! Do you understand how important is that?!"

Frustrated, He sighs, "I doubt you even know who Ashikaga Yoshimasa* is!"

The lady speaks politely, her patience unwavering by Oto-san's rage. "I understand sir... how important it is for you to be a part of the bakufu* and how important it is for your clan to regain its name in the eyes of the Emperor and the Shogun. Especially after the sudden abdication of the young ma-"

"WATCH YOUR MOUTH. YOU HARLOT!", Oto-san's voice seeped with rage.

I didn't want to hear anything further, he spoke something about why it was important for Megumi to become an Oiran straight up so she could be used as a tool to persuade the Shogun into electing him as... whatever he said... it was some detailed plan of his.

I feel my heart sink into a bottomless abyss.

Use...? Megumi...? My Megumi? As a tool to... no...NO!

Tears start to roll down my eyes. I forgot for a moment that I was just behind his door and listening to a conversation that was supposed to be happening in secret. I sobbed, feeling helpless, not knowing what to do, or who to speak to.

The door opens with a creaking sound and in front of me stands Oto-san, with a surprised expression, a hint of disbelief and anger in his eyes. He speaks while drawing out his sword...

"Did you hear anything, Haruhime?"

Megumi's POV:

While waiting for Oka-san to return and taking a walk in our garden, I hear her scream. I immediately ran inside. What would've happened? Did she trip down somewhere? Did Ojii-san hurt her again? But she just went in to ask about my fiance-

My mind was racing with all the possibilities as I ran inside.

But what I saw in there...

It was something I couldn't have imagined.

A gruesome sight.

A cruel sight.

A sight that made me so still that I could hear my heart beating inside my chest loud and clear. I look at my mother, lying on the ground with blood seeping through her belly and her mouth.

Beside her, Ojii-san stands holding his mighty sword, drenched in my mother's blood. This sword, that has always been swung to protect this family's dignity and hone the legacy our ancestors have left behind.

What did my mother do to deserve this...?

Oka-san extends her hand towards me. Is she is trying to tell me something? she looks so desperate...

My chest feels heavy. I cannot take one complete breath and my legs are shaking. Why? What she could've done?

I look at my grandfather, in complete shock as I point to my mother whose life was slowly leaving her body, "Oj-Oji-san what has she d-"
