A few days later, Deke staggered into the store.
"What is it, now?" Daisy Ann asked. "What are you doing?"
Deke ran to his cubby and picked up the phone.
"Calling the law!"
"Again! What for!"
"We got a corpse out back behind the dumpster."
Daisy Ann didn't know whether to scream, wet her pants, or run for her car.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Wait here until they arrive. Tell them I'll be in the back with the body."
Daisy Ann's jaw was still on the floor.
"This is awful, Deke. I hope it's nobody we know."
Deke looked at Daisy Ann. She saw a moment's indecision in his eyes.
"It's Burnell."
He turned, exiting the store without saying another word.
