A loud pounding on the door woke me up in an already-crabby mood.
I threw back the covers of the bed and stormed over to the door, unlocking it and throwing the door wide open, not expecting to see who I saw at all.
"Rebecca?" I looked at the young girl—now five-years old.
"Mama!" she threw her arms around my waist in a fierce hug, squeezing me tightly.
"Becca.." I crouched down to her level, still shocked she was here. "How did you get here? Does Grammy know you're here?"
She shook her head. "Auntie Jean took me to see you. Grammy doesn't know I'm here."
I sighed softly. "Rebecca..."
"Can I come in?" she asked, her large blue eyes filled with tiredness.
Damn you, Jean
"Okay. Let's get you some food, and then bed." I picked her up in my arms and walked into the apartment, closing the door and sitting her down on the couch; finding some mashed potatoes in the fridge from a few days ago and heating them up, walking back over and sitting on the couch.
"Mashed 'tatoes!" she clapped her hands happily as she took the spoon from me, eating straight out of the container.
"Do you want me to call Grammy and tell her you're here?" I asked after she had finished her food and was full.
"No!" she shook her head. "I wanna stay with you, Mama. Please?" she yawned tiredly.
I picked her up in my arms and her head fell against my chest, getting up and walking into my bedroom, I laid her down on the bed and pulled the covers over her; walking out to the living room and dialing my sister's number.
"Hey, Sy. How's it going?" Jean asked, a playful tone in her voice.
"You can be a real bitch sometimes, Jean, you know that?"
"I know. Did you send Rebecca away?"
I sighed. "She's sleeping in the other room."
"See? You are cut out to be a mother after all."
"Jean..." I groaned, then heard a knock come on the door again. "I'll call you back." I hug up the phone and went to the door, opening it up to see Steve.
"Hey, Sydney." he greeted with a kind smile.
"Hey?" I greeted, watching him walk into the apartment. "By all means, come on in, Rogers." I closed the door and turned to him with my arms crossed. "What do you want, Steve?"
"I just came back from a session with my weekly group."
"Your therapy session? Cool." I nodded, "If you're trying to convince me to go to therapy, it's not gonna happen."
Steve put his hands in his pockets. "I'm trying to get you to come back, Sydney."
"Why? No one's at the compound, and everyone's too busy with their own lives to care about the world anymore." I answered.
