It was April 15th, 1989. Hu Yaobang just died from a heart attack. He was a liberal politician, ex-secretary of the CCP until 1986. Students from different parts of the country reacted in a strong way. They went to Tiananmen Square to protest his death. They were praising Hu and demanding justice for the case.

After more than a month of protests in Tiananmen Square and Chang'an Avenue, Li Peng, prime minister, and the Chinese Government, on May 20th, declared martial law in every place of the country. The situation was critical.

After a reunion with Li Peng, Deng Xiaoping, Jia Chunwang, Qiao Shi, Yao Yilin, and the Eight Elders of the CCP that lasted 5 hours and a half, they decided that the best option was to send military to repress the protests. They called the action "Operation Gongzhufen".

The military troops were left under the leadership of Zhang Meiyuan, and the army would move on June 3rd. These military movements were done discreetly for not alarming the people.

But Chai Ling was walking on Chang'an Avenue, she saw something green, and it was moving. She looked closer and she saw that was the 38th Army. It was approaching to the Chang'an Avenue and the Tiananmen Square. She quickly ran to Tiananmen Square, took a microphone and warned everyone with the next words:

"Students of Beijing! We must flee from this city! Military is approaching to here, and I have no doubt they come to repress our manifestation! We can't let our voices be shut! We must go out of here before a tragedy happens! Take your things and get out of here!"

The leaders of the protests went first, then all the people ran behind them, with banners, flags, and tents. Approximately 5 minutes later Chai Ling warned the students, the Chang'an Avenue and the Tiananmen Square were empty. Some people hid the flags and banners where they could. Others covered them discreetly. Others threw them away on the streets and others left them on Tiananmen Square. The objective was to flee the city and hide from the Chinese Army and Government. They started from Guanchang Road, they continued on Qianmen Street, Qinian Street, Zhushikou Street, Chongwenmen Outer Street, Titanian Road, and so on.

After 5 tiring hours of running, the students got out of Beijing.

The military couldn't find them anywhere, so the 38th army was commanded to return to the military base.
