Chapter one
I wake up and yawn as I pull my stuffed unicorn closer to me. My living conditions aren't the greatest but I have a place to sleep so it's fine with me. My mum and dad don't like me much and they keep talking about how they wanted a girl, and not a boy for a child. They say if i were a girl I would be called Mia, like my mum's mother, but they named me rain, because it was raining outside when i was born. When i say my living conditions aren't great, i mean mum and dad come home drunk, and would hit, and starve me.
The biggest meal I've had was an apple, a slice of bread, some milk, and a handful of grapes, and that's only because my dads sister came over for the morning. They say it's because they don't get paid much at their job but they go on many vacations, and buy lots of things. Most of the time they lock me in the cellar until they get back, but sometimes they forget me for a few days. The last time they were on a vacation they locked me in the cellar for fifty-nine days. They were gone for fifty-three days, and forgot about me for six, but they did leave me with the clean drinking water from the bathroom in the next room, and a bit of food.
I've had my unicorn for years. They got it for me on my birthday when I turned four. I believe it was because I could still be considered a girl when they kept my hair long, and had me put dresses on, but now they can't, believe me they've tried. I'm usually verbally abused when they're not drunk, but I know when they are, I'm screwed. They usually get drunk on the weekend or on Fridays. A knock sounds at the front door, and I get up to answer it. "Yes?" I ask, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
I had forgotten to wear a shirt so I'm standing at the door with no shirt and short shorts on, which exposes my skinny under weighted scarred body to the bitter cold air of the winter temperatures outside. The woman gasps at me, "Why are you here?" I ask politely. "I-i'm Rebecca and I'm looking for Rain Johanson?" She says looking me over. "That's me...why are you here for me?" I say and she clears her throat. "It seems as though Mr. and Mrs.Johanson have left I presume?" She asks and I nod. The only reason I'm not in the cellar is because they left while I was asleep.
The lady nods and I fight the urge to ask what she wants again. She surveys the entrance of the house. "Come with me." She says beckoning me toward the car. Though I plan to follow the lady, I make my way back to my little pallet on the floor, and grab my unicorn and head back out. I don't grab any shoes because I don't own any, but I do know the pass code to my parents safe.
I push the door, and it swings open easily. I grab a big baby blue sweater out of mum's dresser, and pull it over my head, not bothering to find pants because the sweater covers my shorts completely. I crawl under the bed and grab the key to open their closet, where they keep their most precious things like money. Going over I grab a duffel bag, and press the key into the lock pad,and it clicks open.
I punch in the numbers 04102007 in. April tenth of 2007 the day mum was officially pronounced pregnant. The thick door swings open, and I find stacks on stacks of money. Shoving it all into the bag, I chuckle. They gave me nothing but clothes, and that's all I leave them with. Dragging the bag behind me I find the lady waiting impatiently by the car. I shrug the annoyed look she gives me off. I place the bag beside me as I sit down.
"When was the last time you've eaten" She asks changing the gears into drive. "Two weeks ago I believe, why?" She doesn't answer me so I rest my head on the bag. Rebecca looks at me through the rear view mirror and sighs. We pull up at a olive.garden and Rebecca tells me to wait in the car. About fifteen minutes later -I think- she emerges with a big bag of food, "Sorry I took so long." She apologizes as she slides back into the drivers seat. I hum as a sign i heard her feeling to sleepy to actually answer. She hands me what I remember is a bread stick, "You can get another stick if you want but you'll have to wait until we get to my house to eat the pasta." She says after stopping at a red light.
I take the bread and give it a small lick recoiling at the strong taste of garlic.. I scrape my tongue along my teeth, then I bite into the bread, and as my teeth penetrate the thick skin of the garlic bread, and the taste of the bread and garlic mix together beautifully. I take another bite but a smaller one so i can saver the garlicky taste. Rebecca locks at me through the mirror and chuckles, before sticking her hand in, and grabbing another bread stick seeing as mine is almost gone. I grab the one she hands me and finish off the one I originally had. I begin nibbling on the new bread. "we'll be there in about an hour and a half, so you might as well get some sleep." She says scratching her chin, With the bread stick in my mouth I slowly drift off.
