Forest

It's sunrise when i open my bedroom window. I do this every morning. It has become routine. I do the typical manoeuvre of jumping out of my window and into a tree, which i scramble down. The tree is genetically engineered to not let me fall. I don't go out the front door like any normal person because the hi-tech intruder alarm would go off downstairs. It's very sensitive; if anything touches the floor, walls or ceiling, even very lightly, a high-pitched alarm will ring throughout the house. I happened once when the remote control for the oven fell from its anti-gravity pad when the FliHi system was down.

Anyway, after i have landed safely on the ground, i make for the river. We live right by the source of the Copenhagen river, so it's just a little stream. Then i follow the river down to the heart of the city, where i buy something to eat for breakfast.

My window is stiffer than usual today. Maybe the hinges are getting worn out from all the opening and shutting. I open the window just wide enough to fit my small body through. The tree reaches out its branches to me as soon as it sees me. I let myself fall into is comfy, leaf-lined wooden arms. Then i thank the tree quietly and climb down until i feel the soft grass underneath my feet. The grass, like everything else, has been altered and fiddled with to make it soft, bouncy and smelling of fresh air and flowers.

My feet barely touching the ground, i run over the stones, grass and moss until i reach the edge of the forest. Every time i reach this place, i feel a tingling all over, like something exciting's about to happen. Usually, nothing exciting does happen. But once in a while, a timid deer wanders out and murmurs hello shyly, and wanders back in, never to be seen again.

I enter the forest with confidence. I know every tree, every badger hole, every rabbit warren. I know this forest better than anyone in the village. I'm the only one that treks through it every morning, rain or shine.

At last, i reach the clearing. I have reached the waterfall.
