The forest was loud.

Rhythmic chirps of crickets filled the air, and leaves rustled in the wind. [Y/n] listened as more nocturnal creatures sang their song in the night, an eerie but comfortable sound to his ears.

"We should've killed the other one as well," Muzan murmured. "He smelled much more delightful than those two brutes we ate instead."

After they had finished eating, [Y/n] insisted on sending the injured man to a place where someone could help him. Hiding the urge to sink his teeth into the man, he carried him to a physician in disguise, with a different face and a different voice. And now, here they were, in their journey of moving closer to the capital.

"Hmm? He didn't do anything wrong to us though. What reason did we have to kill him?" [Y/n] slowed his steps to the same pace as Muzan, his eyes carefully watching the man's clenched jaw. They walked side by side, together, their footsteps soft against the forest floor.

"That man was better off dead than alive. Why must you think of a reason behind each of them?" Muzan asked, a thin expression on his face. His gaze seemed sharper than usual.

"Because it's wrong to murder someone with no good reasoning? It's obvious isn't it?" [Y/n] asked back, crossing his arms as he walked. As they delved deeper into the woods, the canopy of trees above seemed to close in, creating a tunnel illuminated by moonlight for just the two of them.

"We eat human flesh. Why would it be wrong for us, to kill what we eat? They surround us, like lambs for slaughter!"

The wind seemed to howl in agreement, and the moon shone down upon them like a beacon of approval. Muzan knew what they were doing was right for them, and by overcoming the sun, they would make their mark on the world freely without any obstacles.

[Y/n] scolded, "I get what you mean. But they're still humans, not animals for mindless slaughter."

"So what do you suggest then? Since you're quite the bright young man."

" Well, we should eat those we deem a pest to society, what about that?"

"And if we can't find one, what do we do then? Starve ourselves?" Muzan pressed.

"No, of course not," he replied. "There'll always be humans with ugly hearts." He paused for a moment and then added, "We won't run out of food. Don't worry."

"And if I don't follow your rules?'

Something heavy settled inside [Y/n]'s chest, and his tongue suddenly felt very dry. A cutting silence engulfs the forest. A second. Then five.

"Don't say that," he croaked.

Muzan's head tilted, and [Y/n]'s face did something odd, his eyes grew more stormy.

"Because even I don't know what I'll do."

Their conversations continued as usual after that, both prompted to ignore the tension that appeared between them in the forest. They were going to stick together for quite some time. Conflict would not help them find the blue spider lily nor would it make the journey enjoyable.

So they ignore it. They focused on moving forward into the forest, into different towns, with different disguises each time. Never the same eyes nor nose, a different face adorned them for each town.

Four days after traversing various towns and villages, they finally arrived in the capital at midnight. The two had explored enough rolling hills and winding streams, camped under the stars in the night sky. Sadly, since it was the capital, every ryokan and inn seemed to be full with no place for the two demons to hide in.
