“You may now kiss the bride.”
The priest announced before the groom started to open the veil of the bride. Both of them are teary eyed as they kissed passionately in front of the guests.
“Aren’t you envious of your brother Becca? He’s finally having his own family.”
I heard my mom’s voice crack as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
I didn’t respond and continued staring blankly into what was transpiring in front of me. I’m at my younger brother’s wedding. Funny how he got married first before me, the eldest. But I’ve already expected these. I’m ready for these things to come. Because from the very start… I don’t intend to get married. I don’t want to fall in love even if I become an old maid… not until the one I’m waiting for returns. I’d rather remain alone if it’s not with him.
“Hey, Becca, you look so down. It’s your younger brother’s wedding day you should be happy!”
Love handed me a glass of wine as she sat down beside me. It’s the reception and all of my brother’s guests including our few relatives are in our mansion.
“I am happy.” I replied before drinking a little bit of the wine she gave me.
“Oh, I forgot, that’s your happy and sad face. Your expression are all the same whatever emotions you have.” She said before chuckling.
“Where’s your wife?” I asked. She’s been annoying me because she’s not with her wife.
“Over there, having some business talk with your brother.” She pouted and drank on her glass.
Love is my childhood friend, we’ve been friends since grade school up until now. Our families are close that’s why I have no other choice but to befriend this spoiled brat. But she’s a really nice girl, we wouldn’t become this close if I hadn’t stand her pompous attitude for all these years.
Both our families are well known as business tycoons in the country. I don’t want to brag because it’s my family’s money not mine. But I guess we’re pretty rich.
And that’s the problem. Because of their riches, we, their children couldn’t live a peaceful life.
We are being controlled in everything we do, from the courses we’re going to take, the career path we’re going to pursue and even our marriage.
Everything is already planned by the elders.
That’s what I hate.
Because I am the eldest of the family, I am bound to be the successor of our company, and because I’m a female, I need to get married before I take over that position. But I don’t want to take over our family’s business because I don’t know a single thing about how business works. I want to do something I want.
I want to become a film director. It’s my passion. And I won’t let them control my life just like what they did to my brother. I will become who I wanted to be. And if I need to be alone in order to escape my fate, the elders place on me. I will never marry someone my entire life to escape that ridiculous tradition.
“It’s his wedding day but they’re talking about business? They just proved that this marriage is just business as well.” I said sarcastically.
Love silently watches her glass. She looked sad.
Maybe because of what I said.
Just like my family, Love only married Ink for business. They’ve been arranged. Though, Love, truly likes Ink genuinely, unlike her… We’re not sure if she feels the same way too.
I felt guilty for what I said. I shouldn’t have said that to her. How inconsiderate of me. I just said that because of the frustrations I’ve felt the whole day.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make it sound like–“ She cut me off and talked.
“It’s fine. You’re right. This is all business.” She said and smiled bitterly.
“Love…”
“Hey, I’m serious, don’t worry about it Becca, I’m not mad.” She smiled.
“Really?” I asked
She nodded and smiled.
“Hmm! Really!”
“Hey girls, what are you talking about?”
Ink approaches us and sits beside Love.
“Nothing much.” Love replied with a small smile.
“Hey girls, don’t drink too much, you still have classes tomorrow.” I heard my brother said through the microphone onstage.
That punk. Acting like an older brother now that he’s married. He needed to get some beating from me after this. Just because he’s gotten married, he wouldn’t be my younger brother anymore.
“You don’t have to announce that Nin!” Love said loudly back at my brother.
The mansion was filled with laughters after that.
Nin is 21 years old and I’m 22. Obviously we don’t have that much of an age gap. I’m only older for one year.
We’re both still studying, he agreed to get married first because he wanted freedom. Yes, freedom, there’s this family rule that if we get married with the ones that arranged for us, we are free from some of those strict family rules, just like having to pursue nusiness administration course. My brother is still young and he wants freedom just as much as I want.
Our difference is that, I don’t want to be tied with the ones I don’t love.
“Love, I’ll withdraw for the night. I’m sleepy already.” I told Love who’s now tipsy. Her face is so red and her eyeslids are dropping.
“What? No~ stay longer, I have something to tell you later. You will love what great news I have for you.” She said smiling. She’s more clingy than before.
I got a little curious but didn’t show her.
“Just tell me about it tomorrow.” I said before turning around ready to leave.
“Hey! This can’t wait. Are you sure you wouldn’t want to hear it?” She said teasingly.
I waved my hand and continued walking. I don’t have time to have a serious talk with a drunkard.
“My brother’s coming home! Did you hear me? He’s coming home soon~ ahhh I’m so excited~”
I stopped walking. What? Did I hear it right?
I turned around and walked back into her.
“What did you say?” I asked her again but when she finally opened her mouth to say something, she passed out. Good thing, Ink caught her on time, or she’ll be kissing the floor by now.
