Y/N is not a half gem lile steven, he is a regular human but he can take control of a black pearl gem that isn't attached to him and uses it to summon weapons and other items.
If I remember correctly steven is 16 do y/n is around 16 too, rose found him a few months before steven was born, all Y/n had was a black pearl with him. They were raised as brothers, Greg had a heavy influence on Y/N as he uses the pearl to conjure intruments, Y/n also has a special field (kinda like lion) inside his gem, its a regular flower field by a beach, one big thing is that gems in the field can see the colors around them in the field and on the beach but he can't, its just black and white to him.
His backstory other than how he was found is that he's a loner other than the gems, Steven, Greg, Connie, lars, and saddie (he even got an invite to her band but he declined it to try to form his own band) he had an ex but she left beach city long ago. He is also gifted in many forms of combat and weapon usage thanks to pearl (he formed a close relationship to her since they have the same gem type). He likes to write and play songs due to Greg teaching him and Steven, he is a gamer so expect lots of references, last but not least, he has a thing for red hair. *wink wink*

The gem follows him around by floating, kinda like Thor's hammer, it kinda has a personality but it's not a them in of itself, it's hard to explain.
Just so you know, it might be a while before the first chapter is publisbed, it is the whole fing movie, no joke, I just wanted it outta the way so I could make my own content, as far as future, might make an abridged version, like maybe bullet points as to what changed when.
