ACE POV

Zhi told Ace to go long and Ace ran as fast as he could in the open field. He looked up into the night sky and saw the the football gliding through the cool air. He lifts his hands and catches it, bringing it to his chest.

"Let's go bro!" Ace could hear Zhi hyping him up on the other end of the field. Always encouraging, always happy to see him succeed.

Ace did a little dance. Zhi came running down the field to join him. "We definitely about to punish them boys Friday night." They did their hand shake.

"Duh," Ace tucked the ball under his arm. "You crashin at my crib?"

Zhi did a devious smile. "Nah, Coco fine ass finally stopped playin with yah boy."

Ace held his fist to his mouth. "Stop lying, for real?"

He pulled out his phone, showing him the text. "Come on man, what I gotta lie for?" He never was lacking in confidence. Confidence he very capable of backing up.

"Okay, well you enjoy that. My ass need to finish this project that's due tomorrow. Mrs. Haines said it's worth seventy percent of my grade."

"Can't stand her ass, even though she my cousin." Zhi pushed Ace and they squared up, pretending to box.

"Man, it's too cold for all that." He pushed him back.

"Oh you cold? I can keep you warm." Zhi tries to hug him.

"Hell naw." Steps back and runs from Zhi.

"You know you want me." Zhi smiled.

He gave Zhi a ride home afterwards, then stopping to grab him some fast food. His mom was in the laundry room when he arrived home. She put her finger to her mouth. "Don't come in here waking the whole house up." She the loudest person I know, but constantly reminding me to be quiet.

"Woman, grandpa sleep and can't hear. I'm sure Tyla pretending she sleep." Yeah, I was dry snitching, so what.

His mom places her hands on her hips smiling. "You're right about them both, I'm sure" She pushed her cheek in his direction and he kissed it. "How was school, baby?"

He shrugged, hopping up on the folding table and eating his food. "It was cool, everyone just ready to crush them boys Friday."

"Well, you and Zhi better. That's the rival school, if you don't beat anyone else, you must beat them." She meant that too.

"Dukes, don't come to the game with Ma Shila, screaming louder than everyone else." I low key love when she does, I love the support my mom gives me. It's better than some of my peers having no one show up. Shits heart breaking.

He and Zhi called each other's moms 'Ma' and then whatever their names were.

"Boy, I will do as I please." She popped him with a wash cloth.
