" He never thought he'd be in a situation like this, walking into the police station felt slowed. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting an eerie glow that seemed to magnify the weight of his predicament.
He grabbed onto his tattered shirt out of discomfort. As he approached the front desk, he could feel every pair of eyes boring into him, amplifying the tension in the room.
"Can I help you?" The officer at the front desk asked.
"I was kidnapped a week ago and I escaped, can you please call my mom?" He said, voice monotone. The officer's eyebrows furrowed.
"What's your name?" The officer's voice carried a mix of concern and skepticism, but the boy understood.
"David— David Reyes." He answered.
The officer immediately knew who he was by the last name.
"Ok David, can you come back here so we can get more information from you?"
"Yes." He responded before following him.
"You know, this entire week thousands of people have been looking for you? Your case is really big and the outcry was even bigger." David's eyes widened out of discomfort.
"Can we just...get on with the questions?" David's voice trembled slightly, his anxiety palpable as he leaned forward, covering the sides of his face with his hands, ready to answer whatever the officer had to ask.
"—Ok, can you tell me how you were kidnapped and how you escaped? Try not to leave any information out." David took a deep breath, rubbing his temples.
"...Ok." David's voice quivered a little and tears welled up in his eyes. He took one more deep breath and started recounting the events leading up to him standing where he was now."
