Australia; a beautiful place south of the equator, known for their chilled-out residents, beer and beautiful sights. But every good thing that enters our lives, has something that makes them wish they never had it. Take Australia for example. With the few pleasantries I just listed off, you would think that everythings perfect down under, but you were wrong.
Australia has many things to watch out for; sharks, snakes, year sevens, eshays, spiders and not to mention the formidable Karens. All of these wild animals are dangerous and most certainly should never be trifled with. Take Atlas Pattens for example. Poor Atlas was an American tourist in Australia for a family trip back in 2013.
Picture this; it was a peaceful night at around 4am, no one stirred in their sleep, and everything was perfect. That was until around quarter past 4 when Atlas woke up suddenly. He awoke from the irritating feeling of something crawling up his legs. He sat up groggily and reached out to pull back his blankets.
He tried to see what was bothering him and couldnt see anything due to how dark it was. He grabbed his phone from his bedside table and turned the torch on, almost dropping the device at what he saw. Thousands of tiny spiders were sitting under the sheets, some were on his legs and others clung to the underside of the blanket.
Staring at the small arachnids, Atlas let out a small whimper for he had a serious fear of spiders, to the point where he would leave the house if he saw one. His phone slightly vibrated with the notification that it was very low on battery, but the scared boy paid no attention. His only concern was if he would survive without having a panic attack.
The device in his hands vibrated once more and the flashlight switched off. His phone had died. Now even more scared, Atlas wrapped his arms around himself tightly, hoping, praying that he was just hallucinating. He prayed that what he felt crawling further up his legs was his leg hairs moving with the breeze from the open window.
Atlas prayed and hoped so hard that he believed what was crawling into his nostrils and ears was just the wind. There were no spiders in his room. None whatsoever. Atlas pried open one eye and let out a shriek at the giant spider sitting on his face.
Startled from the noise, the spider bit down on Atlass face, sending a wave of numbing pain through the boys bloodstream, heading straight for his brain. Atlas felt more bites inside his nose and ears, as well as all over his arms, legs and chest.
Atlas was growing dizzier as he stayed awake. The boys vision was growing blurry and black shadows swirled around, obscuring his sight. Atlas found it harder and harder to stay awake, until he finally gave in. atlas laid back and closed his eyes, forgetting the feeling of the spiders crawling over his body.
The next morning, Atlass parents went to wake the boy up. they opened the door and the mother let out a shriek at what she saw.
Atlas was lying on the bed covered in webs and spiders of all sizes. Any colour had been drained from the boys face and he looked cold. Not like the cold feeling you get when you crawl out of bed, Atlas looked as cold as death. The poor boy had died at the age of fifteen in the middle of the night. And his fear of spiders was the cause of his death. Atlas was too scared to believe that he was covered in spiders and unknowingly let them eat him as he died.
