The adults stayed in the palace in rooms and me and my brothers slept in a separate building since we were going to be competing and we were younger.

I shared a room with Riley and Tyler shared it with Martin. Riley couldn't shake this bad feeling he had gotten since we arrived here and that concerned me.

You get it Riley is the logical/smart one he didn't believe in sorcery or magic until he went to the Nexus. He doesn't believe in superstition or in childish things like that. But he couldn't shake this.

I was laying in my bed. He had gotten up to get a drink of water and when he left I could feel the coldness of the room and when I would turn my back to the window I could feel the bitterness of something appearing as I turned away and left when I looked back.

The air was cold and hateful which was never the case when you came to the Battle Nexus it was usually full of... well completion, entertainment, and joy. Never cold and empty even when there are no people to compete.

I laid down in my bed just sitting there with the light on. I looked out the window and all the lights were off and no one else was awake.

Maybe we were just on edge because it's so quiet we're used to the big city at night people walking in the streets and an ungodly hour, blaring car horns, people talking and yelling at each other either in their apartments or on the street, gangs of kids running around where they're not supposed to. Trash cans are being knocked over by the stray alley cats.

There was none of that here. It was peaceful and quiet, the coldness is probably because you don't have 1,400 hot bodies per block.

We'd never stayed the night here before, we just weren't used to it. I tried to convince myself. Even though it wasn't working.

I could hear him walking down the hall to come into the room. As he was walking down the hall his steps got quicker and quicker into a speed walk then he ran the last couple of steps and quickly shut the door behind him.

We knew nothing was here in the house but we couldn't shake that dreaded feeling we shared.

He sat on his bed and we started talking about it. I told him "We're maybe just not used to the quiet nights here"

"Nora you know you feel it two there is something wrong here. It's not peaceful here it's quiet like something is about to happen"

" I know but I guess my brain just keeps denying it.
The Nexus doesn't feel like this" I hugged my knees and sat up Riley stood over me and looked me in the eye

"Nora, I'm the logical one remember, and I swear there is something wrong here."

We both walked around for a bit and eventually decided to try to jump the rooftops. No one was up so we wanted to check on everything to make sure nothing would happen tonight anyway.

We tried our best but we were used to the nice smooth FLAT rooftops of the city

The building where the roofs were slanted and had panels on them since everything was built like it was from Feudal Japan, we kept slipping on the roofs and the panels on them were sliding off under our feet and crashing to the ground.

Not exactly our best stealth moments. Eventually, we saw our parents, uncles, and brothers were safe, and a free crash later we made it back to our room and fell asleep.

The next morning I tried to sleep in as late as I could before I was woken up by a guard at my door saying that Riley and my Dad were both waiting for me.

Riley came into the room with a granola bar since there are some things the vendors sell that we can't even digest. We both ate in silence and I as usual finished mine first and he reached behind him and pulled out an apple.
