I lay on my back gazing up into the dark night sky. It was warm this May, the kind of warmth that comes only in late spring. A light wind brushed by causing the long grass to sway around me. The stars twinkled like crystals reminding me of my best friends blue eyes. I had talked to her just yesterday about our Birthday parties, mine was just a week before hers. It was our sixteenth birthday, our sweet sixteenth. I heard in the distance the jets of an air plane fly above. The war was one thing I was concerned about and I knew Our birthdays weren't going to be so sweet, especially when the Nazis had all the sugar, so making a cake was almost impossible. I groaned out loud. Why did Hitler have to come now? I was glad no one knew I was Jewish. I picked up my feet and dragged them to my small home with my Mama and papa. I crouched down beside the glowing fire place trying not to think about the fire from the bombs.
"When do you think it will be over" I asked no one in particular.
"Oh, darling" mama said with a worried voice.
"Soon. We are strong Adina." My papa said to me.
Mama walked over and crouched beside me. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a pin. There were rhinestones that were in the shape of a flower, it was beautiful.
"Take this and keep it. Always remember who you really are." Mama said.
She put the pin in the palm of my hands. I closed my hand tightly around it but carefully.
"Oh mother, I will take good care. I promise." I replied.
"Good, this was your grandmothers. I can trust you to keep it safe"
"Of course mama." I said.
I stood up to go to the kitchen where the rice was sitting in a bowl for me. We had limited food supply in our house, but enough for us. I ate the bitter rice and smiled. Soon I would be sixteen. Soon the war would be over. Or that is what I had at least hoped. I finished eating my dinner and put my plate beside the sink. I then climbed up the creaking stairs to my room. I quickly changed into my pajamas and lay down in my bed placing the pin on my night stand beside me. I thought about my best friend, Eliana and how our birthday parties would turn out. I eventually drifted off to sleep.
The next day I woke up to the sounds of airplanes over head and guns firing In the distance. I pulled off the covers and I skipped down stairs. It was my birthday in just two days. I said my greetings to Mama and papa then called up Eliana.
"Hi Eliana!" I said cheerfully over the phone.
"Hi!" She said.
"Do you think you could come over today to plan our party?" I asked almost immediately.
"Yes, mother said it would be fine." Eliana said.
"Great! See you at noon!"
I then hung up the phone and I sat down watching my mother cook the eggs from the chickens on the farm. As she put the plate down I buttoned the pin up on my shirt. Mama ran her hands gently down my long blonde hair then braiding it down my side as I ate my eggs. After I had finished Eating I ran up stairs changing into my new clothes, A light pink blouse and dark blue jeans. I then placed the pin on my blouse making sure everyone could see it. The clock then striked twelve. A moment later someone knocked on the door. Excitement fluttered through me.
"It's Eliana" I yelled dashing to the door.
