It was strange but also something I had been longing for, since the twins left, to have them here. Sitting at the table with their true family, eating breakfast.
Although they talked to each other in Russian quietly- well, more like quietly arguing.
Valentina was glaring at her twin as he said something in Russian with a smirk. Her jaw was clenched tight and her dark eyes narrowed.
"закрой свой чертов рот, пока я не закрыл его ради тебя!" She said, turning to face him abruptly and slamming the drink in her hand down on the table. ( shut your goddamn mouth before i shut it for you! )
Before Valentino could respond I cleared my throat and raised my eye brows at them. My daughter huffed in her seat and her twin leaned back in his seat with a smug smile.
"Care to tell us what your saying?" My wife asked with a pointed look. Emilio tried to not laugh, Sandro ate some of his food smiling and Angelo shook his head at his little siblings an amused smile on his face.
"Nope, just Valentina being a bit-"
"Watch what you say, Valentino, or I'll stab this knife straight through-"
I cleared my throat again, this time amused at their bickering. My wife still had her brows raised, waiting for a proper answer, before shaking her head.
"You too need to stop being so hostile with each other" she pointed her fork between the twins, "and a new rule from now on; no talking to each other in Russian."
Val turned to her twin, "dumme Regel, wenn du mich fragst" she shook her head slightly. ( stupid rule, if you ask me)
Tino nodded, "Ich stimme zu, Schwester" (I agree, sister)
Carla glared at them while our other sons stifled a laugh- except Emilio- he burst out laughing, hitting Angelo, who was next to him.
"I just said no speaking Russian!"
Tino tilted his head, "we weren't."
"They were speaking German, mother" Alessandro said before placing his knife and fork on his plate. Val tilted her head, "you speak German?"
Her older brother nodded, "I speak many languages, sorella. Including Russian" He raised his eye brows and an amused smile sat on his lips as he stood from his seat.
"почему ты выучил русский?" Val asked, a curious look occupying her face. As Sandro tucked his seat back into the table and straightened his suit he said, "это история для другого раза." ( why did you learn Russian?) (it's a story for another time)
She nodded and cut some more of her pancakes with her fork as he walked around the table, smoothing down the hair at the back of her head he said, "не слушай маму, говори по-русски, сколько хочешь, но в основном делай это, когда ее нет здесь." (dont listen to mom, speak russian all you want, but mainly do it when shes not here.)
He winked at her playfully and she smiled before nodding, he walked out the dining room after saying goodbye to us.
"What did he say?" My wife asked, her eyes narrowed. Val only shook her head with a smile and looked at her twin- who also was smiling slightly.
It made me happy knowing that already they were starting to form a bond with their true brothers.
And I know the only reason why Carla doesn't want them speaking Russian is because it's the language they grew up with- not Italian- and it was a reminder that they wasn't here.
She did it out of jealousy. Spite.
I completely understood because I felt the same but it didn't hide the fact that what she was trying to cover, would always be visible.
There was no removing the past- their childhood- by making them speak English or even Italian. Although I wasn't sure if they did know Italian or not, Ivan probably didn't want them to learn it.
Anyway, Carla needed to understand that the twins would not change their life to suit our mistakes.
And that fact was something I was starting to understand, but that envy will always be there. Digging and digging inside me until it buries itself.
The more time I spend with them, the deeper the hole of envy enlarges, But the more time I do spend with them- the more memories and bond we can all make. As a family.
