Chatter was buzzing the minute Zia Laya decided to make her announcement. Atticus and I got the attention and a part of me was wondering why I put myself in that position to begin with. Maybe it was because of the women who have been eyeing him since we've walked in or maybe it's because I felt the need to mark my territory.
Girl, he is not yours.
Surprisingly, Atticus' brother and sister-in-law didn't do anything dramatic seeing that we stole the spotlight from them although it was their party. They already looked overwhelmed chasing after their son and daughter, Marco and Mariana. They ended up sending them off with Atticus' parents who clocked in early because they had some packing to do for their trip to the Bahamas next weekend.
"Packing" my ass.
If I hadn't known them I would've mistaken them for a young couple based on how in love they still were. He treated her like she was royalty and looked at her in awe as if blue in her eyes explained why the sky was blue. And the warmth of her smile was the reason why the sun shone.
I wish I could experience love like that someday.
I stopped zoning out for a bit and looked down at my lap where Atticus' hand is gripping tightly around my thigh while his thumb traces circles along my inner thigh. He is of course pissed that I told his aunt that we were dating because of the unwanted attention, but I could care less. He sees this as punishment.
Another form of punishment from him is making me sit with him while he yaps all day- about the best kind of whiskey and the best way to fire a gun in order to kill a man- with every man that comes up to him. He's punishing himself in the process because I quite enjoy silver foxes eyeing me up and down with a dark look of lust like they would take me in the next room if possible.
All the while I was scrambling in my chair trying to ignore his hand that was inching closer and closer to my center by the second. Atticus took pleasure in my uneasiness because he pushed my hair to the side and whispered in my ear, "Just wait 'til we get home. I'm gonna make you regret you opened your mouth to begin with."
I smiled in response, trying to hide my flustered expression from the gentleman in front of me who was Atticus' cousin, Nico. His eyes rested on my cleavage while Atticus' hand gripped my thigh harder at the action as if his cousin looking at me would tear me away from him at any second. Atticus sent a venomous gaze in his direction causing him to avert his eyes to my face as I landed an innocent smile.
The fucking audacity.
"So, uh, how did the two of you meet?" Nico asked awkwardly, gulping the glass in front of him in one go as if he felt his cousin's gaze burrowing its way into his soul.
Atticus and I side eyed each other as we wore the same shocked expression on our faces. When I dropped the bomb that we were "dating" I hadn't really formulated a backstory or a plan for that matter.
I mean, I could just say that he brought his dying brother to my clinic in Florida and held a gun to my head until I helped him. And then a group of people showed up for them and my hospital ended up getting attacked so he kidnapped me in the process and held a document over my head in order for me to work as his doctor.
But that story didn't sound like quite a dreamy or romantic one to tell about the two star crossed lovers we were currently pretending to be. His family adored him for whatever obscure reason and I couldn't bring myself to ruin the wondrous vibe of the party with the reminder that the ruthless leader of the Italian Mafia in the flesh was currently in their presence even though this place was probably full of murderers and killers.
