it was game day.

you had helped the team set up before they began their warmup.

"you're gonna do great 'samu," you gave him a tight hug.

your friend smiled appreciatively, "thanks, y/n."

as you were walking back to the stands you bumped into atsumu. he smiled down at you, "are you gonna wish me luck or what?" he asked expectantly.

"good luck atsumu," you pulled him into a hug. he was a bit confused at first, but after a second he seemed to appreciate the gesture.

now you stood in the stands with the miya's mom and yours.

the boys were currently warming up. you couldn't take your eyes off of atsumu. every time you tried to refocus on something else - anything else beside that blonde, your attention would wander back to him.

the conversation you had with him over the phone replayed in your head over and over. you had no idea atsumu felt the way he did; it was like everything was just a front.

"what's on your mind?"

your mom grabbed your shoulder. you turned to look at her, the same nervous expression still adorning your face.

"nothing," you lied.

she gave you a face. your mom knew you were lying.

"just nervous for the game.. that's all." you told her which wasn't a complete lie. you were nervous about the game.

eventually the time ran down. your school announced your starting lineup, then announced the other team's.

atsumu was up to serve first.

the student section began cheering, going absolutely feral for atsumu's serve.

you held your breath as the ball hit the tape, barely making it to the other side of the net.

the first point of the game was an ace that surprisingly left shiratorizawa scrambling. the victory was short lived though as the opposing team got the point in the next serve. you heart raced as the serve came to akagi.

the crowd groaned quietly as he shanked the pass, the ball flying off towards the stands.

your anxiety worsened as the set went on.

you had never seen inarizaki have so many out-of-system plays, even with atsumu salvaging some of them, the hits weren't the best.

after an agonizing back and forth, shiratorizawa claimed the first set with a score of 25-18.

the two teams switched sides. you watched a sweaty atsumu walk over to the other side of the net, plopping down on one of the chairs. catching your gaze, you gave him a reassuring smile, one he returned with a short smile of his own.

inarizaki managed to come back with a score of 26-24, but shiratorizawa countered, coming back with 25-19.

the third set started with atsumu serving again. unfortunately this time it wasn't an ace. ushijma effortlessly put the ball away, showing the hits he was so famous for.

"jesus, that boy is in highschool?" you heard your mom say to miss miya.

the next points for inarizaki didn't come as easily as they did the first set. they struggled to get past their toughest blocker, tendō. atsumu tried a variety of sets - 3s, 4s, 5s, shoots - nothing seemed to get past him. groans echoed through the gym at every block shiratorizawa got.
