"No! You know what, goodbye, Drew, we're done." Lauren ran to the front door before her boyfriend (well, ex-boyfriend now) could say anything else. When she stepped out onto the front porch, she remembered that Drew had picked her up, and that meant she did not have a ride home. Sighing, she set off down the sidewalk. At least she knew how to walk home from here.
As Lauren walked, a few tears slid down her cheeks. She wiped at them angrily, refusing to let herself cry over a boy like Drew. She was furious about the fact that he had no interest in her other than getting in her pants. Sadly, it seemed like that was the case with most people at her school. Despite her anger, Lauren was somewhat relieved that his true colors had shown now, before she had developed any serious feelings for him.
However, the betrayal still hurt.
After a long walk in the sweltering Miami sunshine, Lauren reached her destination. As soon as she entered her house, she plopped down onto the nearest couch. She realized that she was the only member of her family in their home at the moment.
Unable to stand the loneliness for long, she pulled out her phone and typed in her best friend's cell phone number.
After three rings, a friendly Polynesian voice answered the phone.
"Hey Lo! What's up?"
"Hi, Dinah."
Dinah could sense that her friend was upset. "What's wrong?" She paused in thought. "Did something happen with...Drew?"
Lauren sighed. "Ding ding ding. Do you mind coming over? No one else is home and I need someone to talk to."
"I'm already on my way out the door."
She laughed. "Thanks, Dinah. You're an angel."
When Lauren hung up the phone, she had no idea how much those last words gave Dinah the butterflies.
As she flipped through TV channels, Lauren realized that her walk home had made her extremely sweaty. She dragged herself off the couch and upstairs into the shower.
A couple minutes later, Dinah parked her car in Lauren's driveway, leaning back in the driver's seat. She squeezed her eyes shut. "Lauren does not like you," the young girl ordered herself, "she just needs a friend right now, someone to talk to. Just because she's single, doesn't change anything. She's not into you."
When she finished coaching herself, Dinah left her car and made her way inside Lauren's house. "Lauren? I'm here!" She called out as she shut the door behind her. Dinah soon realized that the shower was on upstairs. She walked up to Lauren's room and sat on her bed while she waited. After a few minutes, she pulled out her phone, scrolling through Twitter. She became oblivious to the world around her, and she failed to hear the stream of water turn off. She also failed to hear the door of Lauren's room opening.
But, she did hear someone clear their throat.
Dinah looked up to see Lauren standing in the doorway, wrapped in a towel and still slightly wet from the shower.
"Oh!" Dinah squeaked, turning red. "I didn't... um..."
Lauren just laughed. "Calm down Dinah, I don't really care if you see me like this." She walked into her bedroom. "But, would you mind stepping out while I ch-"
"Yup! Yeah, no problem," Dinah reassured her, scurrying out into the hall and closing the door. She leaned against the wall and groaned quietly. She was already embarrassingly bad at hiding her feelings, but seeing her crush almost naked was too much. She took a deep breath, and by the time Lauren called her back in, she had calmed down.
"So," Dinah started, taking a seat next to Lauren on the bed, "what happened?"
Lauren sighed. "Turns out, Drew only wanted me for sex."
Dinah cocked her head to the side, smirking slightly. "Didn't I warn you about that when you first went on a date with him?"
Lauren shoved her friend playfully. "Shut up!" Then, she sighed, leaning into Dinah. "You're right. I should've seen it. I'm an idiot."
"Hey, that's not true." Dinah took this moment to readjust Lauren's position, so that she was cradling the black-haired teen on her lap, and rocked her back and forth like a baby. Lauren raised her eyebrow, confused, but laughed when Dinah said, in a high pitched voice, "Don't worry, baby Lo, I'll protect you from all the big bad boys in the world."
Lauren curled into Dinah, enjoying her warmth.
The younger girl looked down at the girl in her arms. Most of the time, Dinah would describe Lauren with words such as "captivating," "hot," or "beautiful," but in this moment, she could only describe her as adorable.
"I could treat you better than anyone else could," Dinah mumbled.
Lauren stayed perfectly still, pretending she hadn't heard the sentence that had just escaped the other girl's mouth. Was this more than just a friendly gesture to Dinah?
Surprisingly, Lauren didn't feel the need to jump out of Dinah's embrace and remind herself that she and Dinah weren't a thing. Oddly enough, Dinah's loving words sent nervous tingles throughout her.
Lauren thought back to all the times that Dinah had been there for her when nobody else had. The times she had caught the young Polynesian staring at her, and how she had shrugged it off by saying she "spaced off." Lauren thought about how Dinah was always just a little bit more concerned about her than the rest of her friends.
And suddenly, Lauren realized that Dinah was right: She could treat her better than anyone else.
Could we work? Lauren thought to herself. Dinah clearly had feelings for her, and Lauren felt that she returned those feelings... but they definitely weren't as strong.
Maybe my feelings could grow. Or, I could find out that I never really had feelings for her, I just got caught up in the moment.
Lauren turned her head up towards Dinah.
It wouldn't hurt to try.
As much as Dinah was enjoying this, she knew that she had to bring the moment to an end. She looked down at Lauren one last time...
Only to find her staring back.
Dinah looked away, embarrassed. She glanced back at Lauren again, and she was still staring.
The two of them sat there, gazing into each other's eyes. Lauren could feel the increased speed of Dinah's heartbeat, but she waited, not even blinking.
The seconds ticked by, and Dinah couldn't take it. She bent down to connect their lips.
What am I doing?! Dinah moved her face away before her lips touched Lauren's, only to have a hand on the back of her neck, pulling her in.
The kiss was slow and passionate, lasting a fair amount of time. After their lips parted, their faces remained close.
"Lauren?" Dinah whispered.
"Yes?" Lauren asked in the softest tone she'd ever used.
"You're my first kiss."
Lauren giggled. "No I'm not, you dork. Did you forget about the two other guys before me?"
Dinah brushed the hair out of Lauren's face. "No. This is the first time that a kiss has really mattered to me."
Lauren could've sworn that her heart stopped.
Oh yeah. My feelings are definitely real.
"Oh, and, Lauren?"
"Yes?"
"You look really hot when you're only wearing a towel."
