This first part is a little similar to Into the Woods.
Narrator: Once upon a time, in a far-off Kingdom. There lay a small village at the edge of the woods.
Rani: I wish
Narrator: And in this village.
Rani: More than anything more than life, more than jewels.
Kion: I wish, more than life.
Surak and Nirmala: I wish
Surak: More than anything
Nirmala: More than the moon.
Both: I wish
Rani: The King is giving a Festival.
Surak and Nirmala: More than life.
Kion:I wish
Rani: I wish to go to the Festival.
Surak and NIrmala: More than riches.
Rani: And the ball
Kion: I wish I had a lover.
Surak and Nirmala: More than anything.
Surak: I wish we had a child
Kion: Please
Nirmala: I want a child.
Kion: Please
Rani: I wish to go to the Festival.
Kion: I wish to have a lover.
Surak and Nirmala: I wish we might have a child.
All: I wish
Liliana: You wish to go to the Festival?
Narrator: The poor girl's parents had died.
Liliana: You, Rani, the Festival?
Myra: You wish to go to the Festival?
Daniella: The Festival?
All: The King's Festival?
Narrator: And now she, and her brother Baliyo lived with their stepmother.
Liliana: The Festival? Ha!
Narrator: Who had two daughters of her own
Myra: Look at your nails!
Daniella: Look at your dress!
Liliana: People would laugh at you.
Rani: Nevertheless, I still want to go to the Festival and dance before the prince
Liliana, Myra, and Daniella: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Narrator: All three were beautiful of face, but vile and black of heart.
Baliyo: I wish, I wish my sister were not a fool. I wish my stepmother was not so evil. I wish my parents were here. I wish my aunt and uncle were here. I wish a lot of things.
LIliana: Rani, if you can pick up these lentils, and finish your chores in time. Then you may go to the ball with us, come along ladies.
Myra and Daniella: Yes, mother
Myra: Good luck
Rani: Come, little birds. Down from the eaves, and the leaves, over fields, out of castles and ponds.
Kion: Now I need to get back to the palace before the festival starts.
Rani starts vocalizing
Rani: Quick, little birds. Flick through the ashes, pick and peck but swiftly sift through the ashes, into the pot.
