I'm parked in front of Emery's elementary school, waiting for her to finally make her way out, while Auden sits quietly in the backseat watching all the children walk by in their adorable Halloween costumes.
"Knowing your sister, she's probably talking everyone's ear off, telling them how she helped make her costume," I joke to Auden, even though I know he's too distracted to be listening.
A few minutes later, I see Emery walking down the stairs with a bag full of treats. She approaches the car and opens the door without saying anything.
"Hey, baby. How was your day?" I ask as she crawls into her seat.
Emery sits silently in her seat, looking down and pouting.
"What's wrong, Em?"
She sniffles before opening her jacket. Her Halloween costume is covered in dried chocolate cake and orange icing.
"Oh no! What happened?"
"Addy did this." She sniffles.
"Why would she want to ruin your costume?"
"We were both wearing unicorn costumes today and she said I copied her. I said I didn't and that you and I made this costume together. She wouldn't stop saying I copied her. She got mad and pushed me, then I dropped my cupcake on my costume," she explains while holding back tears.
"It looks like I'll be having a little talk with Addy's mom," I say through gritted teeth.
"I hate Halloween!"
"It'll be okay, sweetie. We'll go home and wash your costume."
"No! I don't want to go trick-or-treating anymore!"
Suddenly, Auden asks sadly, "No candy?"
"Emery, we'll just clean your costume and then we'll still have time to go trick-or-treating."
"I don't want to!"
"Mama? No candy?" Auden asks again.
I turn around and reach into the backseat. "Calm down, baby," I say as I pass Auden one of his toys, hoping to help distract him. "Emery, we have to go out tonight. Your brother is excited."
"But my costume is ruined and I was supposed to go with Addy! I don't even want to be a unicorn anymore!"
"No!" Auden begins to cry out.
"Okay, everyone calm down!" I take a deep breath. "What if we find you another costume? Would you go trick-or-treating then?"
"I can get a new costume?"
"Yes. I'll drive us to the costume shop now."
"Okay!"
"Good. I'm glad that's settled." I sigh in relief.
After I drive to the costume shop that's only ten minutes away, we all go inside and I hope for the best.
"Okay, Em, do you see anything you like?" I ask as I scan the aisles.
"Um..." Emery begins to walk down an aisle, running her fingers over every costume as she walks by.
We continue to walk down every aisle as I hold onto Auden's hand and Emery runs ahead of us.
Things begin to look grim as we finally reach the last aisle. Luckily, I hear Emery call out, "Mom! I found something!"
Auden and I rush over to her.
"I want this one!" she squeals excitedly.
"You do?" I ask, unsure what to make of her choice.
"Yeah! But I want us all to wear one!"
"Um... Halloween is more for children."
"I don't want you go unless you and Dad wear costumes, too!"
"No, Em. I'll buy you this one, but Auden already picked out his costume and your dad and I aren't dressing up."
"Please! I'm really sad about what happened to my unicorn costume and how mean Addy was!"
"Emery..." I scold.
"I only want to go trick-or-treating if we all dress up!"
"There is no way your dad is going to wear that."
"Please, please, pretty please!" Emery begs.
I love my daughter, but I'm beginning to lose my patience as she continues to make a scene in the store. "Emery..."
"Please, Mom! You know I worked really hard on making my Halloween costume and it's not fair Addy ruined it."
I sigh. "Fine..." I groan as I finally give in. "But you may have to use those puppy dog eyes of yours on your dad."
Emery claps happily and then skips toward the cashier with her costume.
I quickly grab the other three matching costumes and follow my daughter to the front of the store. As we're walking, I turn to Auden. "Can you keep a secret?" I whisper and he nods with a little smile on his face. "You're my favourite child." I smile at him before playfully pinching his chubby cheek.
