Turning off the ignition, I sighed and stretched my legs as far as they could reach. I looked in my rear view and began to fix my assortment of curly hair. I caressed my freshly arched eyebrows and licked my full lips. Making a face, I nodded at myself in satisfaction. My stomach began to turn as reality slowly began to settle in. I sighed softly, not in relief, but in acceptance. Slowly climbing out of the car, my eyes roamed the apartment complex. It was just as she described, a close resemblance of Bourbon street. The only difference were how modern the apartment buildings looked and the height of them.
Smiling to myself, I shut the door, while hitting the lock button on my key. Gently, I tossed the keys into my bag as I hung it on my shoulder. Taking notice to the apartments patio and it's black iron finish, a smile crept upon my face once more. Soaking up my new housing complex, my vision was cut short by the big iron gates closing slowly. I looked to my left and saw the french doors awaiting my approach.
On both sides of the doors, massive black iron lanterns hung elegantly, they were lit with a warm fire. They must have been insolated to with stand the early spring winds and rain that were lurking around this year. I placed my hand on the Mortise handle and opened the door and slowly entered.
A light warm vanilla scent stung my inner nose, I instantly felt at ease. I looked up at the massive iron chandelier that hung above me. It brought much character to the entrance. Before I could continue to look, my attention was cut off by a familiar image to my left. She ran to me and hugged me as hard as she could. Making a high screeching sound I pulled back quickly.
"What the hell was that?" She cocked her head to the side.
"Girl," She said with a smile. "that is my love call."
"Really now?" Sarcasm gave my words life. "Not attractive." A soft laugh escaped me lips and she stood with an emotionless face.
"You are so lost," she stated. "its not my love call but my love call. I have two different types. One is for loved ones and friends and then the other is for my, " she paused. "moments."
We both laughed in unison. It had been about a year since I had last seen Braidyn. She was about 5'3, glowing caramel skin and her used to be long curly black hair was now light brown and cut short which she sported in a finger wave style. Her presence was just as bright and warm as I had remembered.
She wore the title as my best friend for 5 years. We became very close due to tragedies in both of our house holds. She was the only person who I truly felt I could trust and tell everything to. She would not judge me but simply give me advice and help me through whatever I had seem to be dealing with at the time.
"How long have you been here?"
"About thirty minutes. The lady was going to go over the final paper work but I told her to wait till you arrived. Makes no sense to go over it twice." I nodded. "Plus, I don't want to hear that mess all over again. They talk too damn much." She said pulling out her vibrating phone.
"They have to, moving into an apartment is not like buying a bike. You have to have stuff on papers. You know that."
"Yeah, and just cause I know that does not mean I have to like it." I shook my head at her statement.
The sound of heels hitting the pavement called to us. A lady with red hair neatly placed in a bun approached us. Her eyes were a fire brown and she had full pink lips. Her stilettos hit the tile as she drew in closer to us. She smiled at us both and placed her hands together in front of her. She stared at us as if to get a good look at what the wind had brought in. Then she finally spoke.
"Excuse me for the staring. It has been a long day and I havn't eaten much of anything," she cleared her throat. "I have already met, Braidyn, right?" Braidyn shook her head yes and smiled. "And you must be Kurbi?" She said smiling, I smiled back and nodded.
"Well, if you ladies don't mind following me. We can retire to my office and go over the paper work one final time and distribute your keys and access cards. As well as parking passes and little things of that nature." She smiled one last time before she pivoted on her stilettos and began to walk the way she had came.
Braidyn pivoted in a 360 degree turn and struck a pose. We laughed lightly and began to follow her. We walked down a long hallway with offices along both sides. We entered an office with three massive chairs a desk and computer. Me and Braidyn took to the two massive chairs. The lady closed the door behind us and took her seat behind the massive desk. She clasped her hands together and smiled at us again.
"Well, first off, I want to say that its an honor to finally meet you ladies. From where your paper work stands it seems that most of this process was done over the phone and through the Internet with one of you. Am I correct?" She said looking down at the papers on her desk. We both hummed a "yes" sound and she shook her head.
"I have went over your paper work and everything seems fine. Your credit check is a plus, your income level acceptable and your background checks have passed. All I need is signatures and and to go over a couple of papers with you." She looked up and smiled and handed us both pens with Bordeaux's name engraved on them.
After about thirty minutes of paper work signing and going over rules and regulations. Braidyn and I sighed in complete relief as we both relaxed in our chairs. Paulette, which we later found to be her name, returned to the office with three black over sized folders. On the front of the folders Bordeaux's was engraved in a gold finish. Sitting each folder in front of us, we opened them in unison.
"Now, I have your original paper work in this folder which we will keep in our files. And in your folder I have made copies of everything you have signed and everything we have talked about. It also has your apartment keys, access keys and parking bar code sticker."
"Now the parking bar code acts as a parking pass. We are the only apartment complex in this area that has them right now. So we know that if you have one you must live here. Make sure that you put that bar code sticker on the left side of your back window. So when you drive in the scanner can read it and it will prompt the gate to open." Braidyn and I shook our heads in understanding.
Paulette bit her lip while she flipped through the pages in the folder. She then closed the folder and looked up and smiled at us. Braidyn and I stared at eachother, then back at her. Silence warmed the room as eye contact was being made. My heart quickly beat in my chest as the closure of this process was rapidly approaching. Paulette stood slowly to her feet and looked down at us. She then began to speak in a soft calming tone.
"You have moved in, you'll never regret, for we take care of our residence. That's a bet. Life on the line, happiness in the air. Our rates can't be beaten they are simply fair. Come settle down in a place you can call home, in a place were fear is not to roam. Bordeaux is your palace, your mansion, your phase. Phase to start a new life, by living day to day. You stopped by and now its time for you to take the tour. You won't be sorry, because Bordeaux is absolutely secure." She placed her hands infront of her and smiled, as silence welcomed us. The words danced in my head like a piece of lent floating in the air. Paulette opened her mouth once more as if about to say something. After pausing for a second she spoke in a soft sincere tone.
"Braidyn and Kurbi," she said. "Welcome to Bordeaux."
